Position Overview

The University of Minnesota is seeking dedicated Culinary Service Associates to join our team. This role offers a starting pay rate of $20.00 per hour.


Work Environment

Work will take place in a natural setting, specifically at the Itasca Biological Station within Itasca State Park. This location is relatively secluded and rural, situated approximately 220 miles from a major metropolitan area. The job entails some physical demands, including lifting items weighing up to 50 pounds and standing for extended periods, up to four hours. Weekend shifts are part of the schedule, and housing is not available on-site.


Position Details

We have two part-time, seasonal positions available:

  • One position: Expected to work approximately 35-40 hours per week, with eligibility for benefits.
  • Another position: Anticipated hours are around 25 per week, with additional hours possible based on operational needs, though this role does not include benefits.

Key Responsibilities

The responsibilities of the Culinary Service Associate include:

  • Dishwashing and Laundry (30%): Responsible for washing and drying dishes and cookware, as well as laundering kitchen linens.
  • Assisting Cooks (25%): Aid in food preparation, including processing ingredients and assembling meals while adhering to safety and food handling protocols.
  • Kitchen and Dining Area Maintenance (25%): Ensure cleanliness and sanitation in all work areas, including cleaning surfaces and managing supplies.
  • Stock Management (5%): Monitor food inventory and communicate any shortages to ensure timely restocking.
  • Table Setup (15%): Prepare dining areas for meal service, ensuring tables are clean and ready for guests.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • At least 6 months of relevant experience or education in large-scale food service.
  • Ability to follow established food safety procedures and perform basic math for recipe adjustments.
  • Capacity to lift up to 50 lbs and stand for extended periods.
  • Willingness to participate in ongoing training and work flexible hours, including weekends.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Basic computer skills, including proficiency with web browsers and email.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate with a diverse team.
  • Food safety training is advantageous.
