UPMC Altoona is seeking a dedicated Medical Laboratory Scientist for a full-time role involving 12-hour shifts from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., with rotation as necessary.

We are offering a SIGN-ON BONUS of up to $15,000, varying based on experience and commitment length.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide courteous and professional interactions with all laboratory clients; respond promptly to phone inquiries. Maintain effective communication both internally and externally.
  • Comply with established laboratory and hospital protocols regarding procedures, methods, quality control, quality assurance, safety, compliance, and personnel policies. Follow prescribed procedures for specimen collection (including phlebotomy when necessary) and processing, ensuring sample appropriateness and stability. Execute qualitative and quantitative analytical procedures with precision and efficiency.
  • Identify critical, abnormal, and unacceptable test results, following established protocols for follow-up. Recognize factors influencing measurements and results, initiating corrective actions as needed. Troubleshoot issues with instrumentation, methodology, specimens, supplies, or results as per predetermined protocols.
  • Operate and maintain laboratory equipment according to training, utilizing defined schedules and written instructions for quality control checks, preventive maintenance, and calibration. Perform minor repairs and manage reagent and supply usage effectively, maintaining appropriate inventory levels.
  • Maintain comprehensive knowledge of techniques, principles, and instruments, understanding their interrelationships and the physiological conditions that affect test outcomes.
  • Assist in the development of tests and evaluation of methodologies/equipment, including selection and implementation.
  • Conduct High Complexity Testing as defined by PA DOH without direct supervision.
  • Temporarily assume first-line supervisory responsibilities for the section/department as delegated.
  • Provide training and orientation for new employees, students, and residents as assigned.

Qualifications include a Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited institution and successful completion of a CAHEA accredited Medical Lab Scientist program, or a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in biological, chemical, or clinical laboratory science along with ASCP or equivalent categorical or MLT certification, or a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical laboratory science and at least two years of experience in a role equivalent to that of a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) in a clinical laboratory.

Preferred qualifications include at least one year of experience in a hospital laboratory setting. Familiarity with medical terminology and laboratory information systems is advantageous.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
Preferred certification includes Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) (ASCP) or equivalent. A New York License is required for positions in New York locations.
