Position Overview

The Lead Advanced Practice Provider is responsible for the supervision and management of advanced practice providers (APPs) within a specific clinical service line. This role involves providing clinical guidance and education, collaborating closely with operational and physician leadership, and overseeing the hiring, development, and professional growth of APPs.

Key Responsibilities

The primary responsibilities of the Lead Advanced Practice Provider encompass three main areas: Clinical Leadership; Administrative Duties; and Compliance with Legal/Regulatory Standards.

Clinical Leadership:
  • Co-manage clinical, operational, and administrative projects within the service line.
  • Facilitate regular meetings with staff APPs.
  • Ensure clinical proficiency and adherence to policies through practice evaluations and case reviews with physicians.
  • Address and resolve patient and family concerns regarding care.
  • Onboard new staff APPs.
  • Provide ongoing education and training for staff APPs.
  • Represent the department in various committees.
Administrative Duties:
  • Engage in financial planning and budgeting for the service.
  • Participate in the recruitment, assessment, coaching, and disciplinary processes for staff APPs.
  • Identify and resolve operational challenges.
  • Lead quality improvement initiatives.
  • Coordinate APP scheduling, including continuing medical education days.
  • Perform additional tasks as assigned.
Compliance with Legal/Regulatory Standards:
  • Ensure adherence to Medical Staff Services policies and initiatives.
  • Advocate for practice models that empower clinicians to operate within their full scope of practice.
  • Engage in discussions at regional and national levels regarding APP practice.
  • Collaborate with ambulatory operations on funding and reimbursement strategies.
  • Participate in legislative and health policy matters impacting advanced practice.
Qualifications

Education:
  • Advanced Practice Nurse: Master’s or Doctorate in Nursing or a related healthcare field from an accredited institution.
  • Physician Assistant: Bachelor’s degree in Science, Physician Assistant Studies, or a healthcare-related field from an accredited institution.
Experience:
  • At least one (1) year of experience as a licensed advanced practice provider (Physician Assistant, Nurse Practitioner, Clinical Nurse Specialist, or Certified Nurse Midwife).
  • Management experience is preferred.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of:
  • Management principles including hiring, evaluation, counseling, and budgeting.
  • Practice evaluation and quality improvement methodologies.
  • National professional organizations and regulatory standards.
  • Standards of care and practice for APP roles.
Ability to:
  • Demonstrate clinical competence and specialized knowledge.
  • Understand the organization and operation of trauma services to ensure effective patient care.
  • Communicate effectively in both verbal and written formats.
  • Build and maintain relationships with diverse groups.
  • Plan, organize, and prioritize tasks independently.
  • Promote evidence-based practice and participate in research or quality improvement projects.
  • Utilize educational strategies to enhance staff development and patient care.
  • Conduct process improvement activities efficiently.
  • Contribute positively to institutional initiatives.
  • Work full-time or part-time as required.
Licenses and Certifications:
  • PA - Physician Assistant State Licensure or
  • NP - Valid DC license to practice as a Nurse Practitioner with current national certification.
  • NMW - Valid DC license to practice as a Certified Nurse Midwife with current national certification.
Physical Requirements:
  • Frequent walking, standing, and reaching in an office environment.
  • Occasional lifting or carrying and frequent pushing or pulling of up to 100 lbs.
  • Regular exposure to healthcare settings requiring personal protective equipment.
  • Manual dexterity to operate office equipment.
