Job Overview:
This position entails protective service work enforcing state laws and local regulations concerning animal control. Responsibilities include conducting thorough investigations related to animal cruelty, animal bites, suspected rabid animals, and public nuisance issues within the county. The role also involves educating the community about animal resources and facilitating adoptions, while assisting the Animal Resources Shelter staff with daily operations. This position requires on-call availability and operates under the limited supervision of the Animal Resources Lieutenant/Assistant Director.
Key Responsibilities:
- Respond to service calls to enforce laws and regulations that protect the public from diseases and damage caused by animals, as well as safeguarding animals from neglect and abuse.
- Conduct investigations into reports of animal attacks and cruelty, which includes interviewing involved parties, collecting evidence, and preparing reports.
- Maintain accurate records related to all service calls.
- Assist shelter staff with daily tasks such as cleaning, animal feeding, grooming, and administering medications.
- Facilitate adoptions, impounds, and transfers while also managing visitor interactions and dispatching calls as necessary.
- Educate the public on responsible pet ownership, rabies awareness, and animal safety through community programs.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
High school diploma or GED, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Comprehensive understanding of laws and regulations related to animal control.
- Knowledge of animal care, behavior, and safe handling practices.
- Ability to effectively communicate and prepare detailed reports.
- Capability to manage stressful situations with professionalism and tact.
- Physical agility and endurance to perform job-related tasks.
This role involves regular physical exertion, including lifting and moving animals, and requires exposure to various outdoor conditions.
Special Requirements:
Must obtain necessary certifications within the first year of employment. Chatham County is committed to equal employment opportunity principles.
