Laboratory Services
Summary
This role within the Metals Section is responsible for the comprehensive analysis of drinking water, wastewater, industrial effluents, surface water, and stormwater samples. Adhering to state and federal regulations, including safe drinking water laws and the Clean Water Act, the position plays a crucial role in safeguarding public health and environmental integrity. Responsibilities include sample reception, preparation, data analysis, and documentation maintenance, ensuring compliance with quality assurance protocols.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
- Conducts sample preparation and analysis using approved methodologies, ensuring the integrity of samples and compliance with established protocols.
- Manages the scheduling of analyses to meet laboratory policies regarding method hold times and turnaround expectations.
- Prepares necessary standards and reagents, calibrates, operates, and maintains a variety of analytical instruments.
- Evaluates analytical data for compliance with regulatory standards, interpreting results and identifying any anomalies.
- Maintains thorough documentation, including case narratives and supporting data, ensuring accuracy and clarity.
- Assists in the implementation of new analytical methods and equipment, ensuring adherence to quality control and safety standards.
- Provides training to colleagues on analytical procedures and laboratory practices.
- Participates in audits and inspections, ensuring that corrective actions are executed as necessary.
- Safely manages potentially hazardous materials and adheres to safety protocols.
- Performs additional related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Proficient in Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) software and common office applications.
- Familiarity with local, state, and federal laboratory regulations.
- Strong understanding of chemistry, microbiology, and environmental engineering principles.
- Skilled in the operation and maintenance of specialized laboratory equipment.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Strong analytical thinking abilities with meticulous attention to detail.
- Effective time management skills and the ability to prioritize tasks independently.
Physical Demands
The position requires moderate physical activity, including the ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform tasks that involve prolonged standing, walking, and manual dexterity.
Minimum Qualifications
- A Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or a related scientific discipline from an accredited institution.
- A minimum of two years of relevant laboratory experience in chemical and/or biological analysis of water or wastewater.
