Job Summary

As a Nuclear Medicine Technologist at Prisma Health, you will play a critical role in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases using radionuclides. Under the direction of the Manager/In-Charge Technologist and Medical Director, you will perform a variety of technical procedures that require a high degree of independent judgment and initiative.

Key Responsibilities
  • Receive and prepare patients for procedures, verifying patient identification and reviewing orders for the procedure to be performed.
  • Operate auxiliary equipment necessary for procedures, maintaining a safe and organized work environment.
  • Communicate effectively with patients and families, preparing them for procedures and explaining the process.
  • Administer radionuclides and medications by the proper route and in the appropriate dosage, preparing instruments, computers, and imaging protocols as indicated by departmental procedure manuals.
  • Evaluate image appearance and perform additional views as required, processing and evaluating computer-generated data.
  • Obtain samples for non-imaging studies, prepare and administer interventional pharmacologic agents as directed by protocol, and maintain sterile technique as required.
  • Perform imaging, non-imaging, function studies, and therapeutic exams according to established departmental protocols or as directed by the nuclear medicine physician or cardiologist.
  • Ensure patient security during movement from one device to another or from the standing or sitting position to the imaging table.
  • Know proper operation of all safety devices common to the department and possess judgment of when to employ said devices.
Radiopharmaceutical Responsibilities
  • Follow correct procedures for receipt and return of radioactive materials, understanding and implementing ALARA measures while performing radio pharmacy duties.
  • Maintain accurate records of doses distributed to patients in appropriate logbooks and computer logs, maintaining a sanitary and organized environment in radio pharmacy.
  • Accurately label and store radioactive materials in appropriate areas, posting appropriate signage in necessary areas.
  • Perform quality control on radiopharmaceuticals as necessary, following directions for proper radionuclide preparations.
  • Properly document receipt and disposal of short half-lived and long half-lived radionuclides, preparing and dispensing diagnostic and therapeutic radiopharmaceuticals according to departmental protocols and within Title A mandates.
Archiving Accountabilities
  • Maintain accurate records pertaining to exams performed, operating the PACS system properly and verifying studies prior to archiving.
  • Properly place exams on optical discs for long-term storage, archiving accurate radio pharmacy information on patient dose tickets and in appropriate logbooks.
Administrative Accountabilities
  • Acquire orders and check for appropriate clinical information, date, and verify correct account number and type.
  • Charge procedures and supplies in compliance with governing regulations, reporting equipment problems to appropriate personnel and recording confirmation numbers in appropriate logbooks.
  • Obtain lists of outstanding charges, investigate, and explain reasons for charges listed as outstanding, complying with departmental downtime protocols.
Environmental Accountabilities
  • Maintain a neat, clean, organized work environment, stocking work areas with linens and supplies as needed.
  • Dispose of soiled linens, used supplies, radioactive materials, and biohazardous materials according to hospital policy, notifying appropriate persons in regard to unsafe electrical, fire, chemical, or equipment hazards.
  • Maintain proper signage with regards to radioactive regulations.
Communication Accountabilities
  • Seek to promote internal and external communications, maintaining ethical standards of relationships and communications.
  • Communicate knowledgeably with physicians and healthcare workers regarding patient procedures, maintaining a pleasant and helpful attitude during all phone communications.
  • Seek dialog with central scheduling as necessary to ensure understanding of listed patient procedures, assessing communication ability of patients and taking appropriate measures to ensure patient/family understanding of procedures to be performed.
  • Assure that all appropriate consents are signed, arranging for translation skills utilization as appropriate.
Instrumentation Accountabilities
  • Perform and evaluate routine quality on all instrumentation as specified in the departmental quality manuals, determining operational status and timely calibration of all survey instruments.
  • Perform and evaluate dose calibrator constancy tests, recording all daily QC checks in their appropriate logbooks.
Radiation Safety Accountabilities
  • Consistently use personal radiation monitoring devices, properly storing them and utilizing ALARA principles at all times.
  • Instruct patient family members and other healthcare providers of the proper radiation safety measures to be taken after the administration of therapeutic radiopharmaceuticals.
  • Comprehend and follow departmental and regulatory policies on recordable events and misadministration, properly disposing of or storing radioactive materials and waste.
  • Be alert to and aware of non-authorized persons in the nuclear medicine department, challenging them as to their identity and purpose for being in the department.
Proctorship Responsibilities
  • Instruct students in methodology of nuclear medicine procedures and principles of the science of nuclear medicine technology.
  • Closely supervise activity of students assigned to the nuclear medicine department, evaluating/documenting student progress as per protocol of academic institution student attends.
  • Mentor newly hired nuclear medicine technologists in departmental policies and procedures, evaluating new hires on equipment orientation on a schedule established by the Manager.
