Ecosystem Development Strategist

Empire State is seeking a highly motivated and experienced professional to fill the role of Ecosystem Development Strategist. This position will be based in New York and will require in-office presence, with hybrid work schedules possible based on specific job duties.

About the Role

The successful candidate will support the Executive Director of the Division of Science, Technology and Innovation (NYSTAR) within Empire State's Division of Small Business and Technology Development. The primary objective of this role is to identify and develop programs and strategies that strengthen NY's innovation ecosystem. Key responsibilities include:

  • Structuring and implementing initiatives aligned with strategic industries and technologies to stimulate NY State's innovation and commercialization pipeline.
  • Engaging and developing long-term working relationships with local, state, and federal resource partners.
  • Assisting Exec. Director with the creation/implementation of proactive programs that support innovation and technology companies to meet Empire State goals.

The ideal candidate should possess excellent verbal and writing skills, have a strong understanding of technology and innovation sectors, not for profit supporting technology acceleration, academia especially research commercialization, and relevant governmental grant writing, policy, and/or administration experience. A bachelor's degree or associate degree with 7 years direct relevant experience may substitute. Experience required: 5+ years of relevant experience, preferably in leadership capacities; experience building strategies and planning execution and in the innovation space; multidisciplinary background preferred.

Key Responsibilities

This role involves the following key responsibilities:

  1. Support the Executive Director and ESD partners (e.g., GO-SEMI, Policy, OSWD, NY Ventures, Strategic Business Development) in structuring and implementing initiatives aligned with strategic industries and technologies to stimulate NY State's innovation and commercialization pipeline.
  2. As directed, engage and develop long-term working relationships with local, state, and federal resource partners.
  3. Assist Exec. Director with the creation/implementation of proactive programs that support innovation and technology companies to meet Empire State goals and result in the creation, retention and attraction of jobs to New York while meeting fiduciary responsibilities and utilizing program resources effectively.
  4. Ensure effective coordination and integration of activities between ESD staff, Executive Chamber, agency specialists and other public and private stakeholders and organizations as needed and appropriate.
  5. Manage direct reports overseeing entrepreneurship and innovation programs.
  6. Contribute to the development of internal and external communications, collateral, and events promoting the NYSTAR network and with required annual reports.
  7. Oversee and undertake special projects or initiatives as needed.
