Job Duties:
The Nutritionist Associate plays a crucial role in evaluating the nutritional eligibility of clients within established program guidelines and independently recommends suitable food packages.
Responsibilities include assessing nutritional status and eligibility for program services through comprehensive nutrition assessments, utilizing various techniques such as food frequency history, and evaluating growth and weight patterns, along with biochemical values and medical history.
Based on these assessments, the associate will set dietary objectives tailored to individual needs and provide counseling to patients regarding their specific nutritional requirements. Referrals for specialized counseling with a Nutritionist will be made when necessary.
This position is funded through WIC, and its continuation is subject to annual funding reviews. Employment is contingent upon the ongoing availability of grant or non-general funds.
As part of the health care team, VDH mandates that all personnel provide proof of immunizations or evidence of immunity for specific diseases, including hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, varicella, and seasonal influenza.
The Virginia Department of Health offers a comprehensive benefits package, including 12 paid holidays, medical, dental, vision, and life insurance, as well as retirement plans and various types of leave.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Fundamental knowledge of nutrition and dietary standards.
- Ability to conduct interviews and gather relevant information.
- Competence in interpreting, documenting, and compiling routine data.
- Experience in patient education and effective communication.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills to interact with diverse patients and colleagues.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
- Experience in managing multiple tasks and prioritizing workloads.
- Proficiency in using computer systems.
Additional Considerations:
- Preferred training or experience in Nutrition, Dietetics, or related fields.
- Bilingual proficiency in Spanish and English is advantageous.
- Experience in obtaining blood samples and measuring heights and weights is a plus.
