Position Summary:

The Vice President of Property Tax Valuations & Appeals is responsible for reducing property tax liabilities associated with Brookfield assets. This role requires a thorough examination of the property tax framework and departmental operations, which includes all facets of real and personal property tax reporting, valuations, appeals, and compliance oversight related to the preparation, review, and submission of income statements and rent rolls to tax authorities. Furthermore, this position involves providing property tax forecasts to the Development and Acquisitions teams during their pursuit of new assets.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead all property tax valuations and appeals, ensuring the correct application of property tax regulations across the organization to effectively mitigate liabilities and risks. Stay updated on changes in property tax legislation on a state and jurisdictional level. (45%)
  • Compile and assess annual assessments, income and expense data, cost models, and sales analyses for assigned assets to identify potential property tax appeal opportunities.
  • Guarantee the timely preparation and submission of property tax appeals to avoid missed opportunities.
  • Represent Brookfield in property tax hearings across various jurisdictions, advocating on behalf of the company in front of assessors and appeal boards. (35%)
  • Develop and present property tax budgets and forecasts for assigned assets. (20%)
  • Collaborate with colleagues in the Property Tax Department and other departments including Accounting, FP&A, Asset Management, and Development.

Qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field is required.
  • 7-10 years of managerial experience is essential.
  • 10-15 years of experience in property tax appeals, including direct representation across multiple jurisdictions and property classes.
  • Extensive knowledge of Property Tax and departmental processes is necessary.
  • 10-15 years of experience in Real Property Valuation.
  • Technical expertise in ad valorem taxation of real and/or personal property.
  • Experience in preparing property tax appeals is required.
  • Understanding of Federal, State, and Local Taxes and their implications on property tax is crucial.
  • Preferred certifications include IAAO, AI, and IPT.
