GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES:

  • Compounds and dispenses prescribed medications, drugs, and other pharmaceuticals for patient care, adhering to professional standards and state and federal legal requirements. Reviews prescriptions issued by physicians or other authorized prescribers to ensure accuracy and determine formulas and ingredients. Directs pharmacy staff in the mixing, packaging, and labeling of pharmaceuticals. Provides information to pharmacy customers regarding drug interactions, side effects, dosage, and storage of medications.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor's degree or an advanced degree in pharmacy is required.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in a hospital pharmacy is preferred.
  • Must possess a current license in the state of Texas.
  • Strong interpersonal skills are necessary for effective communication with physicians and various hospital personnel.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Educates healthcare professionals and patients on medication use, as well as compounding and dispensing prescribed medications for patient care.
  • Performs professional and technical activities related to the distribution of medications, maintenance of drug inventory, patient records, and patient financial records.
  • Supervises interns and technicians within the assigned area, ensuring adherence to policies, procedures, and regulations to guarantee compliance and patient safety.
  • Takes full responsibility for orders, including review, clarification, order entry, accuracy, preparation, follow-up, and delivery to the correct unit. Identifies, intervenes, and resolves issues related to drug therapy.
  • Visually interprets physician's orders, including drug product, strength, dosage, start and stop times, and initial inventory quantity, ensuring appropriate products are selected for accurate dose preparation.
  • Regularly follows internal procedures in the pharmacy and on nursing units to verify controlled substance inventories, minimize drug diversion, and document wastes or missing doses.
  • Conducts routine checks for expired medications.
  • Performs nursing unit inspections, narcotics audits, and participates in nursing/pharmacy meetings.
