Job Overview
The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center is dedicated to improving patient care quality. The Infection Control Specialist will conduct clinical assessments and service evaluations related to infection management, infection rates, and surveillance activities to enhance departmental operations.

Role Summary

The Infection Preventionist (IP) plays a crucial role in monitoring and educating on risks associated with infections for patients at The Ohio State University Medical Center. Surveillance efforts encompass both inpatient and outpatient environments to assess outcomes throughout the care continuum. Risk mitigation strategies involve addressing infection control challenges within the medical facility and the surrounding community that affect hospitalized patients. The IP is instrumental in formulating infection control policies and acts as a resource for administrators, healthcare providers, staff, and the community regarding best practices in infection management.

Educational Requirements
A Bachelor's Level Degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.

Essential Qualifications
A Bachelor's degree in a health-related discipline is necessary, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A solid understanding of epidemiology, infection control principles, infectious diseases, and microbiology is required. Experience in hospital infection control is preferred. Certification as an infection control practitioner is advantageous. A background as a registered nurse is preferred. A minimum of two years of clinical experience in a hospital environment is preferred. Strong communication, interpersonal, organizational, and facilitation skills are essential. Demonstrated capability to initiate and complete projects is required. Project management experience is a plus. Analytical skills, including a basic understanding of statistics, are necessary. Ability to learn new software systems is important. Must be independent and self-motivated.

Key Responsibilities:

(30%) Program Management and Surveillance

  • Develop, implement, and assess the organizational infection prevention program.
  • Create an annual surveillance strategy based on the served population, provided services, and analysis of surveillance data.
  • Apply epidemiological principles to conduct surveillance and investigations.
  • Review and adjust the surveillance strategy as needed.
  • Formulate, interpret, and assist in the execution of infection prevention and control policies and procedures.
  • Communicate infection prevention and control information and data to various committees and healthcare professionals as assigned.

(30%) Education Design and Delivery

  • Evaluate and address the educational needs of stakeholders.
  • Establish educational goals, objectives, and strategies utilizing learning principles and available educational resources.
  • Assess the effectiveness of educational initiatives and learning outcomes.

(10%) Compliance with Regulatory Standards

  • Adhere to regulatory and mandatory reporting obligations at local, state, and federal levels.
  • Facilitate adherence to regulatory and accreditation standards.
  • Stay informed on infection prevention and control regulatory and accreditation requirements.

(25%) Performance Improvement Initiatives

  • Utilize performance improvement methodologies to drive change.
  • Define project scope effectively.
  • Select appropriate performance improvement tools to enhance efficiency, reliability, and sustainability of initiatives.
  • Ensure customer needs and expectations are considered in the ongoing development and improvement of processes, products, and services.
  • Monitor and analyze process and outcome metrics to evaluate effectiveness and sustainability.
  • Engage in performance improvement committees, teams, and initiatives as required.

(5%) Additional Responsibilities:

  • Mentor and onboard new Infection Preventionists.
  • Lead evaluations and implementations of new products.
  • Contribute to the development and review of employee health policies and procedures related to infection prevention and control.
  • Assess risks associated with occupational exposure to infectious diseases.
  • Conduct exposure investigations in collaboration with employee health services.
  • Assist in developing rates and trends of occupational exposures.
  • Support the implementation of immunization and screening programs.
  • Participate in strategic planning for the Department of Clinical Epidemiology.
  • Flexibility in scheduling to ensure off-shift expertise and guidance from the Department of Clinical Epidemiology.

Performance Standards:

Professional Accountability: Infection Preventionists are responsible for the development, evaluation, and enhancement of their practice to maintain required skills and knowledge, including:

  • Achieving certification in infection control (CIC) within three years of hire if not already certified.
  • Completing an annual APIC competency self-assessment.
  • Developing a professional growth plan annually.
  • Seeking constructive feedback from supervisors, mentors, and colleagues regarding professional practice.
  • Maintaining current knowledge through the review of best practices, evidence-based research, and guidelines.
  • Actively participating in professional organizations at both national and local levels when possible.
  • Demonstrating professionalism through a commitment to patient safety and advocating for safe practices and policies.

Collaboration:

  • Consult and collaborate with local, state, and federal public health officials, and community health organizations as needed.
  • Engage multidisciplinary teams to ensure changes are vetted by all stakeholder groups.

Leadership:

  • Utilize principles of influence, leadership, and change management.
  • Bring enthusiasm, creativity, and innovation to practice.
  • Work collaboratively with others, providing direction when necessary.
  • Share knowledge and expertise readily.
  • Contribute to the development of less-experienced healthcare professionals through education and mentorship.
  • Prepare and deliver presentations on infection prevention to external audiences.

Research and Implementation Science:

  • Critically evaluate research and evidence-based practices, incorporating appropriate findings into routine practice.
  • Integrate evidence-based practices into policies, guidelines, protocols, and educational strategies.
  • Identify barriers to implementation and develop strategies to minimize or eliminate them.
  • Implement strategies to sustain efforts, such as audit tools and meaningful feedback.

Informatics in Infection Control:

  • Familiarity with infection prevention software and related technology is essential.
  • Collaborate with IT to generate meaningful electronic reports that enhance infection prevention initiatives.

Fiscal Responsibility:

  • Consider financial implications and clinical outcomes when making recommendations, evaluating technology and products, and developing policies and procedures.
  • Employ a systematic approach to assess costs, benefits, and efficacy.

Patient Population Served:
