Key Responsibilities

The Counselor II plays a vital role in supporting the treatment team at Hoag Addiction Treatment Center (HATC) by engaging in assessment, treatment planning, referral recommendations, discharge planning, education, and direct therapeutic interventions for patients and their families throughout the treatment process. This position is integral in achieving the objectives outlined in the patient's treatment plan and assists in the overall clinical care and case management.

The Counselor II is responsible for coordinating care with external providers through referrals when necessary and will perform additional duties as assigned.

Specific Duties

In addition to the responsibilities mentioned above, the Counselor II will assist with admissions and discharges, ensuring all necessary documentation is completed. This role includes conducting screenings and intake assessments in accordance with established guidelines. The Counselor II will provide clients with an orientation to the program, including rules and a tour of the facility. This position also involves assisting with the search of personal belongings during admission and conducting random room checks in a residential care setting. The Counselor II acts as an advocate for clients in crisis situations, resolving urgent issues as they arise.

Facilitating group counseling sessions and managing assigned group activities is a core responsibility. The Counselor II will lead educational lectures for clients and ensure that all documentation related to patient care, group sessions, and incidents is completed accurately and promptly. Participation in case conferences and staff meetings is expected, along with leading community meetings for clients in residential care. The Counselor II will encourage client participation in self-help groups, such as AA/NA, and maintain communication with healthcare providers regarding physician orders and medication management.

Daily documentation of living activities and vital information is required, including recording patient behaviors and notifying the Supervisor of Addiction Care and Clinical Manager of any behavioral changes. The Counselor II will also be responsible for receiving and presenting change of shift reports as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required; an Associate degree in Behavioral Science or Allied Mental Health is preferred.
  • A minimum of two years of experience in addiction or behavioral health is required.
  • Three years of experience in an addiction or behavioral health environment is preferred.
  • Familiarity with CARF and/or JCAHO accreditation standards is required.
  • Knowledge of 12-step programs, Smart Recovery, and other treatment models is essential.
  • Understanding of HIPAA regulations is required.
  • For SolMar Retreat: Knowledge of incidental medical services/MAT as per established policies and procedures is required.

  • CATC II - Certified Addiction Treatment Counselor II
  • or CATC III - Certified Addiction Treatment Counselor III
  • or CATC IV - Certified Addiction Treatment Counselor IV
  • or CADC II - Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor II
  • or CADC III - Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor III
  • or LAADC - Licensed Alcohol & Drug Counselor
  • BLS-AHA Basic Life Support certification required at hire.
