Compensation Range

The salary range for this position is between $132,810 and $204,636, depending on the level of expertise and experience.

Position Summary

We are seeking a Computational Mechanics Code Developer to enhance our computational mechanics capabilities. In this role, you will be responsible for developing and refining cutting-edge algorithms, ensuring their effective implementation, and facilitating their application across various teams tackling complex challenges. This position resides within the Computational Engineering Division (CED), which supports critical Strategic Deterrence Programs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop or identify advanced computational mechanics algorithms to expand modeling capabilities and implement high-performance computing software.
  • Gain proficiency in finite element-based simulation tools such as ParaDyn, Diablo, or ALE3D.
  • Assess algorithms for current and future applications, building a foundation of knowledge to guide users and propose enhancements.
  • Engage proactively with users to evaluate software performance and resolve moderately complex modeling or software issues.
  • Adapt software development and quality assurance practices, contributing to their ongoing enhancement.
  • Document technical efforts, publish findings in peer-reviewed journals, and present research at scientific conferences.
  • Collaborate with internal and external partners on technical practices related to mechanical and structural systems.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Additional Responsibilities for Advanced Level

  • Lead teams in the creation, execution, and application of innovative methods in areas such as:
    • Manufacturing challenges.
    • Multi-scale and multi-simulation models, potentially incorporating Machine Learning/AI.
    • Utilizing emerging computational hardware (e.g., GPUs) and programming paradigms for efficient and scalable simulations.

Qualifications

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance, requiring U.S. Citizenship.
  • PhD in Engineering or Computational Mechanics, with a focus on solid mechanics, or equivalent education and experience.
  • Proficient in C/C++ or Fortran programming languages.
  • Extensive knowledge in areas such as advanced spatial discretization for large deformation response, nonlinear response representations for various materials, coupled multi-physics simulations, and numerical methods for fracture.
  • Experience in conducting independent research.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for effective collaboration and technical presentation.
  • Willingness to travel as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in academic, industrial, or national laboratory settings with a leadership role in developing computational mechanics algorithms.
  • Comprehensive understanding of computational mechanics, particularly finite element methods for nonlinear mechanics problems.
  • Familiarity with software implementations on parallel systems and heterogeneous architectures.
  • Knowledge of constitutive model development for various solid materials.
  • Experience with machine learning/deep learning frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow) and proficiency in Fortran.
  • Experience with commercial software such as Flow3D, Ansys, or Abaqus, especially in relation to Additive Manufacturing simulations.

Additional Information

This position is a Career Indefinite role, open to both internal and external candidates.

Security Clearance Requirement

This position necessitates a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance. If selected, a Federal background investigation will be initiated to determine eligibility for access to classified information.
