Compensation Information

The salary range for this position is between $132,810 and $204,636, with specific ranges for different experience levels:

  • SES.2 Level: $132,810 - $170,556 Annually
  • SES.3 Level: $159,330 - $204,636 Annually

Position Overview

We are seeking a Computational Mechanics Code Developer to enhance our computational mechanics capabilities. In this role, you will be responsible for developing and adapting cutting-edge algorithms, ensuring their effective implementation, and supporting various teams in tackling complex engineering challenges. This position is situated within the Computational Engineering Division (CED), which plays a vital role in supporting Strategic Deterrence Programs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop or identify advanced computational mechanics algorithms to enhance modeling capabilities and implement high-performance computing solutions.
  • Gain proficiency in one or more finite element simulation tools such as ParaDyn, Diablo, or ALE3D.
  • Assess algorithms for current and future applications, building expertise to guide users and strategize improvements.
  • Engage proactively with users to evaluate software performance and resolve moderately complex modeling or software issues.
  • Adapt software development practices and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Document technical efforts, publish findings in peer-reviewed journals, and present research at scientific conferences.
  • Collaborate with internal and external partners on technical practices related to mechanical and structural systems.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Additional Responsibilities for SES.3 Level

  • Lead the development and application of innovative methods in areas such as:
    • Manufacturing challenges.
    • Multi-scale and multi-simulation models, including Machine Learning/AI applications.
    • Utilization of emerging computational hardware (e.g., GPUs) for efficient simulations.

Qualifications

  • U.S. Citizenship and ability to secure a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance.
  • PhD in Engineering or Computational Mechanics, with a focus on solid mechanics, or equivalent experience.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as C/C++ or Fortran.
  • Extensive knowledge in areas like advanced spatial discretization, nonlinear response modeling, coupled multi-physics simulations, and numerical methods for fracture.
  • Experience in conducting independent research.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for effective collaboration and technical presentations.
  • Willingness to travel as required.

Preferred Qualifications for SES.3 Level

  • Significant experience in leading the development of computational mechanics algorithms in academic, industrial, or national laboratory settings.
  • Comprehensive understanding of computational mechanics, particularly finite element methods for nonlinear mechanics problems.

Desirable Skills

  • Familiarity with finite element methods in computational mechanics.
  • Experience with software implementations on parallel systems and heterogeneous architectures.
  • Knowledge of constitutive model development for various solid materials.
  • Familiarity with machine learning frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow) and proficiency in Fortran.
  • Experience with commercial software such as Flow3D, Ansys, or Abaqus, particularly in relation to Additive Manufacturing simulations.

Additional Information

This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance. Selected candidates will undergo a Federal background investigation to determine eligibility for access to classified information. All cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.
