Role Summary

This role is designed to assist the interim chairperson of the Department of Teacher Education in managing a budget of approximately $11.9 million across multiple accounts. The responsibilities include financial forecasting and personnel oversight.

The selected candidate will collaborate closely with the college budget officer and human resources to ensure effective financial management.


The incumbent will be responsible for overseeing accounting and human resource processing tasks, generating financial reports, providing regular updates on budget and accounting matters, verifying the accuracy of financial documentation, and assisting with short-term fiscal administrative tasks. Additionally, they will implement policies and procedures to resolve financial challenges.

The position involves managing departmental expenses, including overload, summer appointments, and external revenue streams. The incumbent will analyze financial data, report findings, identify root causes, and propose solutions and recommendations.


Key responsibilities include coordinating with College Human Resources to establish budgets, accounting strings, and labor projections, as well as assisting in the preparation of faculty, academic staff, and graduate student appointments and payments while resolving any payment-related issues.


The incumbent will review and authorize documents such as vouchers, purchase requisitions, and procurement card transactions, ensuring compliance with established budgets and university policies.

The role also requires performing monthly reconciliations and forecasts to guide the chairperson in making informed programmatic decisions based on the department's financial status. Supervisory experience is essential to mentor and develop direct reports, ensuring they effectively utilize business processes and procedures.



Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge equivalent to that typically acquired through the completion of a four-year degree in Accounting; three to five years of progressively responsible experience in supervision, accounting practices, and the development of accounting controls, policies, and procedures; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Certification as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) may be required.



Preferred Qualifications

Experience collaborating with faculty and academic staff is highly desirable. Familiarity with university budgeting processes is preferred, along with knowledge of MSU systems (EBS, KFS, HR-SAP, Concur, BI, Power BI).
