Position Overview


Under the guidance of the Supervisor of Shelter Services or Supervisor of Hotline Services, the Crisis Support and Shelter Advocate is responsible for providing safety, support, advocacy, resources, and effective communication to both colleagues and guests in the shelter, as well as to callers and texters reaching out to the crisis hotline.

This role is vital for achieving optimal outcomes in crisis situations and requires strong communication, critical thinking, problem-solving, and de-escalation skills, with minimal supervision.

Key Responsibilities

Shelter Duties

  • Safety: Maintain thorough knowledge of emergency protocols and safety procedures within the facility.
  • Communication: Ensure effective communication among guests, case management, and other departments while documenting guest needs, incidents, and concerns.
  • Documentation: Accurately complete and ensure proper documentation in the data management system.
Assist in gathering statistics, facilitating interdepartmental communication, and completing necessary reports.

  • Facilities: Conduct formal safety inspections of the shelter and its various spaces.
Ensure the shelter is clean, organized, and well-stocked at all times. Perform laundry duties as required and report any safety hazards or maintenance issues.

  • Community Living: Monitor and document assigned chores.
Support residents in maintaining cleanliness in shared areas and oversee ongoing activities within the shelter. Provide guidance and enforce house rules for residents.

  • Meals: Assist and orient Peace Dinner volunteers.
Help with meal preparations, set-ups, and clean-ups while ensuring a safe and orderly kitchen environment. Maintain required food safety certifications.

  • Support: Undertake additional tasks as assigned by the Shelter and Hotline Leadership team.
Collaborate with Shelter Program Coordinators and Lead Advocates to support residents effectively. Maintain knowledge of current referral sources and provide a supportive, non-judgmental environment.

  • Intakes/Outtakes: Conduct interviews and manage the intake process for new residents, as well as the outtake process for those departing.
Ensure timely data entry for all resident movements and maintain communication with the team.

Hotline Duties

  • Manage and document crisis calls, information requests, jail release inquiries, and law enforcement communications. Ensure client forms are reviewed and accurately entered into the data system.
  • Safety: Maintain comprehensive knowledge of emergency protocols.
  • Documentation: Ensure accurate and timely documentation in the data management system.
Assist in compiling statistics as needed.

  • Support: Stay informed about current referral sources and make appropriate referrals to other departments.
Provide a non-judgmental environment for residents.

  • Maintain a consistent work schedule and demonstrate regular attendance.
  • Adhere to agency policies and safety protocols.
  • Participate in all mandatory meetings and training sessions.

Required Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED. Experience working with clients in crisis or those who have experienced trauma. Knowledge of trauma-informed care practices, confidentiality, active listening, and documentation procedures.

Preferred Qualifications

Associate's or Bachelor's degree preferred. Experience with domestic violence issues and/or crisis hotline work is advantageous.

Minimum of two years of professional experience in advocacy, case management, food service, or a related field; or a combination of education and experience.

CPR certification is a plus.

Communication Skills

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety protocols, logs, and policy manuals. Proficient in preparing safety plans, intake forms, charts, and correspondence.

Ability to communicate effectively with distressed callers, residents, and colleagues while completing required paperwork accurately and promptly.


Reasoning Ability

Ability to solve practical problems and navigate various concrete variables in situations with limited standardization.



Other Skills and Abilities


Requires proficiency in operating standard business equipment, including computers and relevant software, keyboards, calculators, telephones, FAX machines, photocopiers, etc.
