The Department of Family Medicine at UConn Health is on the lookout for a Vice Chair of Clinical Operations, Quality and Innovation. This department boasts a well-established framework, including a fully accredited residency program, a sports medicine fellowship, integrated behavioral health services, and multiple practices across various healthcare organizations. Connecticut is poised to significantly increase its investment in primary care, emphasizing advanced primary care teams and leveraging technology to enhance service delivery. This role presents a unique opportunity to take a leadership position at departmental, institutional, and state levels, contributing to collaborative efforts aimed at improving primary care services.

The Vice Chair will collaborate closely with the Chair to expand clinical services and the department's reach through innovative strategies that enhance quality and promote health equity, while also ensuring excellence in education and research. The successful candidate will be instrumental in developing and implementing departmental strategies that increase faculty numbers, care delivery locations, and the spectrum of clinical services in a pioneering manner. Oversight of quality improvement initiatives within the department will also be a key responsibility, working alongside leadership from both the University and affiliated healthcare organizations.

The ideal candidate will possess experience in budget management, a strong interest in operational enhancements, and a background in personnel management, coupled with a growth-oriented mindset. Essential traits include trustworthiness, integrity, a robust work ethic, collaborative spirit, a positive demeanor, and a commitment to leading by example.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Engage in clinical care at a suburban clinical site while serving in a medical director capacity at that location, alongside precepting in an urban family medicine residency program.
  • Contribute to medical student education during clinical engagements.
  • Foster the development and maintenance of efficient clinical operations and collaborative relationships within Family Medicine.
  • Assist in the formulation, execution, and evaluation of a departmental growth strategy.
  • Innovate and expand clinical programs, including the strategic use of technology.
  • Design and implement improvements in clinical workflows.
  • Oversee reporting on provider performance and quality metrics.
  • Support the recruitment of faculty and staff.
  • Mentor junior faculty, ancillary providers, residents, staff, and students.

Required Qualifications:

  • Board Certification in Family Medicine with a current state license or eligibility to obtain one.
  • A minimum of five years of experience leading progressive improvements in a clinical setting.
  • Experience in leading Quality Improvement initiatives, demonstrating proficiency in techniques such as Lean/Six Sigma, Root Cause Analysis, FMEA, PDSA cycles, etc.
  • Proven ability to navigate complex work environments.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Additional qualifications such as an MBA, MHA, MPH, or Clinical Informatics training focused on clinical growth and innovation.
  • Experience in designing, implementing, and monitoring Value-Based Care initiatives.
  • Proficiency in utilizing data from electronic health records for analysis, report generation, dashboard development, and workflow optimization.
  • Experience in an academic clinical, teaching, and research environment.
  • Evidence of scholarly contributions through regional or national presentations and publications related to Quality Improvement, Healthcare System Redesign, or similar areas.
  • Experience aligned with appointment at a senior rank (Associate Professor) is preferred.
  • Skills in financial and strategic planning at a divisional or departmental level.
