Job Overview
A Polysomnography Specialist, commonly referred to as a Sleep Technician, operates under the guidance of a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist, the Sleep Medical Director, or the Sleep Center Manager. This role is crucial in delivering thorough assessment and management of sleep disorders, encompassing both in-center and at-home diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, comprehensive patient care, and direct education for patients.
Key Responsibilities
1. **Preparation and Setup for Sleep Studies**
- Review patient history and confirm medical orders.
- Adhere to Sleep Center protocols regarding sleep studies.
- Upon patient arrival, verify identity, gather necessary documents, and obtain consent.
- Clearly explain the procedure and guide the patient through either in-center or out-of-center sleep testing.
- Select and calibrate the appropriate equipment to ensure optimal functioning, making adjustments as needed.
- Apply electrodes and sensors following established standards.
2. **Conducting Sleep Studies**
- Implement procedural protocols (e.g., Multiple Sleep Latency Test, Maintenance of Wakefulness Test, Parasomnia studies, PAP, and oxygen titration) to ensure accurate data collection.
- Perform physiological calibrations to guarantee proper signal acquisition and make necessary adjustments.
- Follow 'lights out' protocols to document baseline values (e.g., body position, oxygen saturation, respiratory and heart rates).
- Monitor study quality to ensure signals are free from artifacts and document any observed anomalies.
3. **Data Management and Patient Interaction**
- Record routine observations, including sleep stages and significant clinical events, to assist in scoring and interpreting polysomnographic results.
- Support appropriate interventions to ensure patient safety and therapeutic effectiveness, such as administering positive airway pressure and oxygen.
- Verify the integrity of collected data during 'lights on' procedures and complete the data collection process, including patient questionnaires.
Qualifications
Education Required:
High School Diploma or GED
Preferred Experience:
Experience in healthcare and/or pediatrics is advantageous.
