Team Approach

At UNC Internal Medicine, we emphasize strong doctor-patient relationships and ensure outstanding continuity of care. Our collaborative healthcare team includes nurses, administrative staff, clinical pharmacists, care assistants, nutritionists, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and physicians, all working together to provide exceptional patient care.

Work Schedule

This role offers a standard Monday to Friday work schedule, with no weekend or holiday shifts required.

Position Overview

The Practical Nursing Specialist provides direct patient care, addressing both psychological and physical needs in accordance with established care plans, physician directives, and nursing protocols. Care is delivered to patients across all age groups, from neonates to geriatrics, in various settings including inpatient, outpatient, home health, or hospice environments.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Contribute to the creation and maintenance of individualized, goal-oriented care plans, collaborating with other healthcare professionals to meet patient and caregiver needs.
  2. Monitor, assess, document, and communicate patient responses to treatments and therapies, adjusting care priorities based on patient and caregiver requirements.
  3. Participate in departmental enrichment activities that promote positive outcomes, including committee involvement, quality improvement initiatives, and the education of new staff.
  4. Administer a wide range of treatments and therapies, including respiratory treatments, suctioning, medication administration, and monitoring of vital signs and laboratory work.
  5. Assist patients and families during the admission process, providing orientation to the healthcare experience and support during discharge.
  6. Support patients and families by employing de-escalation techniques and facilitating age-appropriate coping strategies.

Qualifications

Education: Graduation from a state-accredited practical nursing program is required.

Licensure/Certification: Must hold a valid Practical Nurse (LPN) license in North Carolina and possess Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

Experience: A minimum of two years of prior experience as a Licensed Practical Nurse is required.

Skills and Abilities: Candidates should demonstrate strong clinical skills, effective communication abilities, and a commitment to patient-centered care.
