Position Responsibilities:

The Automation Controls Specialist is essential for the effective implementation of direct digital controls (DDC) within mechanical HVAC designs. This role involves a comprehensive understanding of HVAC equipment functionality at both the unit and building levels.

The successful candidate will be responsible for producing the control documentation integral to the mechanical design, which encompasses schematic diagrams, point lists, operational sequences, and specification sections. The specialist will also serve as a Master Systems Integrator (MSI), tasked with designing, programming, developing graphics, and integrating complete DDC control systems from initial hardware design through to final system optimization. Field support may be required to ensure successful project delivery, including clarifying design intent, addressing technical inquiries, and participating in various project phases until completion.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Develop control documentation for mechanical designs, including schematic diagrams and operational sequences.
  • Function as Master Systems Integrator to design and implement comprehensive DDC control systems.
  • Stay updated on control strategies and code modifications; engage in training and maintain necessary technical certifications.
  • Remain informed about Niagara and other DDC control systems programming practices.
  • Participate in construction administration, including project planning meetings and control submittal reviews.
  • Provide field support for DDC control system project execution, ensuring clarity of design intent and technical guidance.
  • Collaborate regularly with controls and commissioning teams and industry professionals to maintain current knowledge.
  • Create control hardware design and installation documentation, including equipment selection for material billing.
  • Master the use of Tridium, Niagara, and other programming tools for effective system management.
  • Conduct fine-tuning and troubleshooting of DDC control systems, ensuring high-quality project delivery.

Additionally, this role may involve supporting other projects within the Performance Group, which includes:

  • Conducting site assessments to gather equipment data and evaluate system performance.
  • Assisting with Test & Balance services.
  • Analyzing operational performance and proposing enhancements for efficiency.
  • Supporting utility analysis and other commissioning activities.
  • Performing additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • 8+ years of relevant experience in the field.
  • Comprehensive understanding of HVAC systems and control methodologies.
  • Thorough knowledge of DDC control systems.
  • Proven track record in managing small-scale projects.
  • Experience overseeing subcontractors.
  • Commitment to continuous learning and skill enhancement.
  • Ability to quickly adapt to software applications related to control systems.
  • Proficiency in DDC programming using Niagara or similar platforms.
  • Experience with programming HVAC systems, including AHUs, boilers, and chillers.
  • Willingness to travel up to 25%.

Preferred:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering is preferred; however, candidates with relevant experience in construction trades or building automation systems may also be considered.
