Juvenile Institutions Officer

We are seeking a highly motivated and dedicated individual to fill the position of Juvenile Institutions Officer in our Probation Department. As a key member of our team, you will play a vital role in ensuring the safety and well-being of youth in our care.
Key Responsibilities- Supervise and counsel youth in detention and treatment facilities, providing guidance and support to help them achieve their goals.
- Enforce disciplinary rules and policies, ensuring a safe and structured environment for all youth.
- Deliver medication as prescribed, participate in individual and group counseling, and facilitate the application of case plans.
- Plan and coordinate work projects, recreation, and leisure activities for youth detainees, ensuring they complete tasks within allotted timeframes.
- Observe and write reports on youth behavior, recommending intervals for suicidal youth and entering pertinent information into computer programs.
- Monitor youth during showers, supervise laundry duties, and perform other work details as needed.
- Receive and release youth, make intake and release decisions, and contact parents/guardians of case status.
- Supervise visits between parents and youth, and supervise youth on alternative release status or probation.
- Physically restrain and/or redirect assaultive youth, secure and transport detained youth, and assist with meal preparation and serving.
- Train colleagues in specialized areas, train and guide Extra Help employees and volunteers, and act as lead officer of a shift as needed.
- Completion of 90 quarter units or 60 semester units of college coursework, including 14 quarter or 9 semester units in sociology, psychology, criminology, or a related field.
- A combination of training, education, and experience equivalent to the above, including working with juvenile/youth offenders or as a counselor in a group home.
- Meet minimum peace officer standards, including good moral character, no prior felony convictions, and a valid California Class C Driver License.
- Pass a background investigation, polygraph examination, and psychological examination, and submit written documentation of your legal right to work in the United States.
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university with related coursework focus.
- Bilingual skills in Spanish, with the ability to read, write, and converse fluently in English and Spanish.
Incumbents must work in a structured, regimented work environment, enforcing rules while maintaining flexibility, and adhering to professional ethics in working with youth and young adults. They must wear required uniforms, stand for extended periods, work outdoors in varying climates, and perform First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation as needed.
Selection Process- Application and Supplemental Questionnaire Review: Review applications and supplemental questionnaires to determine those applicants who meet the employment standards.
- Personal History Questionnaire (PHQ): Candidates who are qualified will be notified by email to complete and submit a Personal History Questionnaire.
- Computerized Written Examination: Candidates who passed the PHQ will be notified via email with instructions for taking a computerized examination.
Candidates must receive a percentage score of at least 70 on the computerized written examination to be placed on an employment list. An adjustment may be made to raw scores based on factors listed in Civil Service Rule VI.
