Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced HVAC Lead to join our corporate Facilities group at General Atomics and Affiliated Companies. As a skilled specialist, this position is responsible for servicing, troubleshooting, modifying, rebuilding, and repairing facility mechanical equipment, including air-conditioning, refrigeration, ventilation, heating, plumbing, and mechanical systems.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform periodic inspections to locate and determine the cause of equipment malfunctions.
  • Conduct maintenance programs to prevent failure of equipment such as centrifugal compressors, electrical controls, evaporative condensers, pumps, fans, and heating equipment.
  • Charge air-conditioning systems with refrigerant, check for leaks, and set and adjust controls and regulators.
  • Overhaul equipment and function in a leadership role, providing direction to less experienced staff.
  • Act in a lead role to provide craft guidance, leadership, and skills training to experienced and less experienced staff.
  • Utilize CMMS systems to support supervisors with daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual work order schedule development, oversight, and completion.
  • Direct HVAC and Building Automation Systems contracted services to repair or maintain facilities as required.
  • Perform and/or support second-level work order reviews for all assigned technicians.
  • Oversee critical work and project work in the field and/or job site.
  • Work with procurement to effectively manage contractors, POs, and develop statements of work as needed.
  • Conduct preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance procedures as assigned.
  • Perform refrigeration system charges and leak tests, add refrigerant as needed, and determine if equipment needs to be overhauled.
  • Install, repair, and inspect preventive/corrective maintenance of HVAC-R equipment.
  • Perform advanced piping repairs of compressed air, gas, water, and condensate drain lines.
  • Utilize predictive maintenance technology to detect possible future failures.
  • Install and repair refrigerant piping, utilizing silver brazing and soldering techniques associated with HVAC and piping systems.
  • Repair and replace HVAC controls and associated components.
  • Conduct emergency repairs on HVAC controls and associated components as required.
  • Provide recommendations to enhance periodic inspections to locate and determine the cause of equipment malfunctions.
  • Conduct maintenance programs to prevent failure of plumbing, compressors, and HVAC systems.
  • Replace belts, pulleys, shafts, bearings, rotors, and impellers for motors and pumps.
  • Operate, troubleshoot, and identify electrical and mechanical issues via the Building Management System (BMS).
  • Install, troubleshoot, and perform simple software configurations and modifications with BAS systems.
Requirements
  • Typically requires a two-year technical degree or trade school equivalent and ten or more years of progressive experience as an HVAC mechanic.
  • Must demonstrate extensive knowledge of construction industry practices, concepts, and regulations, as well as plumbing, heating, ventilating, and mechanical codes, including safety codes.
  • Must have complete and detailed knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local safety codes and be able to read, interpret, and explain schematics and mechanical drawings.
  • Must have comprehensive knowledge of Energy Management Control Systems and associated architecture and a comprehensive understanding of pneumatic control systems.
  • Must have a working knowledge of and discretion in safely operating hand and power tools.
  • Must be customer-focused and possess a valid California driver's license with a clean driving record verified by the DMV, EPA certification in refrigerant recovery, excellent analytical skills, excellent interpersonal skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to resolve extremely complex issues.
  • Ability to work independently or lead in a team environment is essential.
  • Must be able to work Monday-Friday 6:00am-2:30pm and must be able to work overtime hours and different work shifts as required.
