POSITION TITLE: Sales Associate

DEPARTMENT: Divisional Retail Operations

REPORTS TO: Store Manager

FLSA STATUS: Part-Time; Non-Exempt

POSITION OVERVIEW: The Sales Associate plays a vital role in managing cash transactions, ensuring accuracy while operating cash registers and credit card machines. This position involves assisting customers with donations and efficiently processing sales transactions in a friendly and professional manner. The Sales Associate is also responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and organization of the store and donation areas, performing basic janitorial tasks to ensure a safe and tidy work environment. Additionally, they assist in the handling, pricing, and movement of merchandise as part of daily store operations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Ability to follow oral and written instructions with minimal supervision.
  2. Basic knowledge of inventory management, retail sales, and loss prevention.
  3. Proficient in operating cash registers and handling monetary transactions.
  4. Strong customer service skills, providing prompt and courteous assistance to customers and donors.
  5. Familiarity with equipment and systems such as computers, Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel), and point of sale systems.
  6. Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with basic reading, writing, and math abilities.
  7. Able to work collaboratively with the public, colleagues, and volunteers.
  8. Capable of understanding and following instructions.
  9. One (1) year of experience in any field (retail/sales preferred).
  10. Acceptable criminal history record.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  1. Manage cash register operations, process sales, issue credit slips, and handle corrections or voids. Accurately accept payments and verify checks and credit cards.
  2. Respond to customer inquiries via telephone.
  3. Assist in resolving customer complaints regarding merchandise.
  4. Provide excellent customer relations by ensuring prompt and courteous service, with properly priced merchandise.
  5. Stock the store by sorting, hanging, pricing, merchandising, and discarding unusable items. Remove outdated items, label them, and return them to the warehouse.
  6. Receive acceptable donations and courteously decline those that are not suitable.
  7. Sanitize furniture and domestic items as needed.
  8. Participate in store staff meetings and stay updated on new policies and directives.
  9. Support the loss prevention program by reporting incidents of loss to the Store Manager promptly.
  10. Identify safety hazards and assist in protecting property and maintaining store cleanliness.
  11. Ensure the security of the donation area and trailers.
  12. Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
  13. Perform other related duties as assigned.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is conducted both inside and outside the store. Employees may be exposed to varying temperatures and weather conditions. The noise level is generally low to moderate, and hearing protection may be required when near operating machinery.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: This role requires speaking, sitting, bending, walking, pushing, pulling, standing, kneeling, stooping, reaching, handling, and balancing. Employees must be able to lift and move objects weighing up to 50 lbs and operate standard office equipment.

SOFTWARE SKILLS: Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook is preferred. Basic knowledge of integrated database applications and the ability to learn new software programs with training is essential.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Must be able to understand, follow, and provide both written and oral instructions while interacting with diverse individuals in person and over the phone.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to perform basic calculations and apply concepts such as ratios and percentages in practical scenarios.

PERFORMANCE SKILLS: Candidates should be punctual, organized, self-motivated, flexible, and eager to learn and assist others.

PROTECTING THE MISSION: Completion of the online course for this area and passing the required background checks are necessary for employment.
