About the Role:

James Madison University's Facilities Management is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Lead Horticulture Specialist to join their team. As a key member of the landscape crew, you will be responsible for leading the development and maintenance of the geographic information system (GIS) database of all trees, coordinating with supervisors to collect data, and ensuring safe applications of approved products and chemicals.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist with the development and maintenance of the GIS database of all trees
  • Lead correspondence with supervisors to collect data and coordinate time frames for inspections
  • Ensure safe applications of approved products and chemicals as stated in the IPM plan and by federal, state, and local regulations
  • Ensure SDS sheets are up to date for all chemicals being used and develop a disposal plan for all chemicals no longer in use
  • General landscaping to include the installation and maintenance of flowers, trees, shrubs, and turf, as well as trash removal and snow removal
  • Assist other landscape crews during special events, sporting events, graduation, and snow and ice removal

Requirements:

  • Working knowledge of general landscaping practices and procedures
  • Knowledge of turf maintenance and installation
  • Ability to work independently, lead a small group of employees, and operate tractors, trucks, backpack blowers, chainsaws, snow-blowers, and various hand tools
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work for extended periods of time in a variety of environmental conditions
  • Must have a current Pesticide Registered Technicians License and be at least 19 years old with a valid driver's license for a minimum of 24 consecutive months

Working Conditions:

This position requires working in a fast-paced environment with a focus on maintaining a safe and healthy work environment. The employee in this position will be considered designated, meaning the work performed is essential to university operations and the employee will be required to work during periods of authorized closings.
