About the Role:

James Madison University's Facilities Management is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Lead Horticulture Technician to join our team. As a key member of our horticulture team, you will be responsible for leading the development and maintenance of our geographic information system (GIS) database of all trees, as well as coordinating with supervisors to collect data on new plantings, removals, and other pertinent Tree Campus information.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist with the development and maintenance of the GIS database of all trees.
  • Lead correspondence with supervisors to collect data on new plantings, removals, and other pertinent Tree Campus information.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) schedule/calendar with supervisor.
  • Ensure safe applications of approved products and chemicals as stated in the IPM plan and by federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Ensure SDS sheets are up to date for all chemicals being used.
  • Assist with the development of a disposal plan for all chemicals no longer in use.
  • Ensure all applications are read, understood, and followed according to the labels when pesticides, herbicides, rodenticides, and germicides are used.
  • Perform general landscaping duties, including the installation and maintenance of flowers, trees, shrubs, and turf, as well as trash removal and snow removal.
  • Assist other landscape crews during special events, sporting events, graduation, and snow and ice removal.

Requirements:

  • Working knowledge of general landscaping practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of turf maintenance and installation.
  • Ability to work independently and lead a small group of employees.
  • Ability to operate tractors, trucks, backpack blowers, chainsaws, snow-blowers, and various hand tools.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work for extended periods of time in a variety of environmental conditions.
  • Current Pesticide Registered Technicians License.
  • Must be at least 19 years old and possess a valid driver's license for a minimum of 24 consecutive months.

Working Conditions:

  • Shift is Monday – Friday, 6:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m., with overtime as required to cover special events and inclement weather.
  • There is a slightly alternate schedule during the summer months.
