The starting pay for this role is $27.38 per hour. The Environmental Health Department is looking for an Environmental Health Specialist I to become part of their team.Role Responsibilities:
The Environmental Health Specialist I (EHS1) engages in technical and regulatory tasks across various domains including air quality, land services, licensed establishments, or water quality, aimed at safeguarding the health of individuals, ecosystems, and communities.
New hires in this position are required to become a Sanitarian in Training within one month of employment and achieve Registered Sanitarian status with the Montana Board of Sanitarians within one year. Successful completion of registration as a Sanitarian qualifies employees for promotion to Environmental Health Specialist II.

Key Duties:
- Advocates for environmental and public health protection through education, program promotion, inspections, monitoring, investigation, and enforcement.
- Collaborates with the regulated community and the public to ensure adherence to environmental laws and regulations.
Specializations:
EHS 1s may be assigned to one of the following areas:
- Licensed Establishment EHS 1: Conducts inspections of restaurants, daycares, pools, spas, and other public facilities to ensure compliance with regulations.
- Land Services EHS 1: Issues permits for septic systems and wells, conducts site evaluations, and reviews applications for subdivisions.
- Air Quality EHS 1: Operates air monitoring sites, monitors pollution levels, and ensures compliance with air quality standards.
- Water Quality EHS 1: Collects and analyzes water samples, coordinates pollution prevention efforts, and collaborates on water quality improvement projects.
Qualifications:
- A Bachelor's degree in environmental health or related biological or physical sciences is required.
- Applicants must meet the minimum standards for sanitarians in training, including coursework in chemistry, biology, and microbiology.
- One year of professional experience in environmental health, public health, or related fields is necessary.
Special Requirements:
- A valid Montana driver's license is required.
- New employees will be asked to disclose vaccination status for required vaccines upon hire.
Physical Demands:
This role requires physical exertion, including bending and climbing, and involves moderate risks necessitating safety precautions. Employees may be exposed to outdoor weather conditions and laboratory chemicals.
