Job Overview

POSITION SUMMARY

This role is an entry-level, full-time non-exempt position under the direct oversight of the Facilities Superintendent. The individual in this position will engage in a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks related to the upkeep and repair of municipal buildings and facilities.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Diagnose and rectify maintenance concerns across municipal facilities.
  • Follow a preventative maintenance schedule for all City facilities.
  • Replace air and water filters as per the maintenance guidelines.
  • Install new ceiling tiles as necessary.
  • Execute painting tasks for City facilities, including interiors, exteriors, handrails, and light poles.
  • Clear ice and snow from public walkways and parking areas.
  • Conduct minor carpentry and plumbing repairs.
  • Report any mechanical issues with the maintenance vehicle; ensure the vehicle is stocked with necessary supplies.
  • Respond to emergency maintenance calls from staff, addressing issues such as water leaks or spills.
  • Maintain cleanliness and order in public facilities, workshop, garage, and storage areas, ensuring equipment is secured at the end of the workday.
  • Provide excellent customer service by addressing inquiries and resolving facility-related issues.
  • Assist in training new staff on operational practices and adherence to policies and procedures.
  • Keep accurate records of maintenance activities and operations.
  • This position requires periodic on-call availability throughout the year.
  • Perform general custodial duties in public buildings as needed.
  • Support the setup and breakdown of special events.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS

  • Proficient in construction skills including carpentry, painting, masonry, plumbing, roofing, and welding.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving abilities for addressing maintenance challenges.
  • Administrative capabilities for managing supply orders, record-keeping, and scheduling maintenance tasks.
  • Physical strength and dexterity to handle equipment and materials.
  • Endurance for extended periods of standing or walking.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills for discussing maintenance matters.
  • Ability to work in extreme temperature conditions.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

A High School Diploma or GED is required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Frequent exposure to various weather conditions, including severe conditions.
  • Ability to walk on uneven surfaces, bend, kneel, squat, and twist.
  • Exposure to airborne dust and loud noises.
  • Regular climbing of ladders up to 12 feet high.
  • Driving and working on slippery surfaces.
  • Handling toxic substances occasionally.
  • Ability to lift items weighing up to 50 pounds and perform overhead lifting.
  • Capability to work in confined spaces and perform repetitive motions.
  • Continuous standing, frequent walking, and bending, along with the use of tools and climbing stairs.
