The Culinary Service Associate role is situated within the Nutrition and Food Service department of the Veterans Health Administration. This position plays a vital role in the preparation of food items, assembling meal trays, and delivering meals to Veterans.

Responsibilities

This is an ongoing announcement that may be utilized to fill multiple positions.

Key Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Utilizing appropriate cleaning agents to sanitize food preparation areas.
  • Maintaining cleanliness in walk-in refrigerators and freezers within a food service environment.
  • Managing and storing sanitized utensils, dishes, and glassware for public use.
  • Preparing sandwiches with prepped ingredients for dining services.
  • Portioning food into standard serving sizes using designated utensils and containers.
  • Creating and tossing fresh salads or fruit mixes in substantial quantities for public service.
  • Brewing coffee using commercial-grade coffee machines.
  • Setting up dining areas with necessary glassware, utensils, and condiments.
  • Performing thorough cleaning of large cooking equipment such as pots and mixing bowls.
  • Executing heavy-duty cleaning tasks, including ceilings and exhaust hoods.
  • Operating a conveyor belt dishwasher effectively.
  • Arranging cafeteria lines and steam tables with hot and cold food selections.
  • Clearing tables and transporting trays of dishes for extended periods.
  • Regularly sweeping and mopping high-traffic areas.
  • Moving kitchen equipment to maintain cleanliness behind and beneath them.
  • Delivering meals, including hot foods and beverages, to patients or patrons.
  • Disposing of food waste and trash appropriately.
  • Interpreting written materials such as schedules and safety instructions.
  • Following safety protocols regarding hazardous materials.
  • Understanding and adhering to menu and recipe guidelines.
  • Applying sanitation principles to prevent food spoilage.
  • Complying with safety regulations while performing manual tasks.
  • Maintaining quality and efficiency under time constraints.
  • Identifying health and safety risks in the work environment.
  • Working swiftly and accurately under pressure.

Work Schedule: Varies, including weekends and holidays.

Physical Requirements: This role requires light to moderate physical effort. Work is conducted in kitchen settings where heat and humidity from cooking and dishwashing can be significant. Tasks may involve heavy cleaning and moving of equipment. Continuous standing and walking are expected, along with frequent bending and lifting of items weighing up to 20 pounds independently and occasionally more with assistance.
