About the Position

The Senior Vice President of Translational Research will serve as a pivotal scientific and strategic leader, essential for advancing the pipeline at Tarsus Pharmaceuticals, Inc. The position acts as a bridge between discovery and clinical development, focusing on projects that lie at the intersection of these two critical areas.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Act as a Subject Matter Expert in Pharmacology, Pathophysiology, and drug target biology for diseases affecting both the anterior and posterior segments of the eye.
  • Forge and nurture robust external collaborations with key opinion leaders, academic institutions, and other stakeholders, establishing a reputation as a scientific authority in ophthalmology.
  • Collaborate with internal teams, including Clinical Development, Innovation Lab, and Business Development, to shape translational strategies from preclinical phases through candidate selection and into early clinical development.
  • Develop stage-appropriate translational strategies for unique assets aimed at addressing significant patient needs, incorporating critical decision-making points.
  • Design and implement non-clinical studies to address mechanism of action-related translational inquiries and enhance understanding of treatment approaches for diseases.
Translational Biology and Pharmacology:
  • Enhance internal expertise in prioritized ophthalmology disease areas, identifying potential mechanisms, disease models, and preclinical proof of concept strategies.
  • Formulate clear, testable translational hypotheses to tackle unmet medical needs, including mechanisms of action, pharmacodynamics, and patient selection criteria.
  • Identify the most relevant models, engage with leading Contract Research Organizations (CROs), and collaborate with academic experts to assess potential assets.
Translational Sciences Strategy:
  • In partnership with clinical development, define the translational strategy for projects, guiding clinical development efforts, including indication identification, patient stratification, combination potential, and biomarker strategies.
  • Work alongside clinical development to establish differentiation strategies for therapeutics, defining clinical hypotheses and disease indications for early clinical phases.
  • Contribute to hypothesis-driven study designs, execution, and data analysis, identifying the most relevant preclinical and ex vivo models.
  • Identify key scientific questions for projects and develop translational science plans based on their priority.
Innovation and Collaboration:
  • Collaborate with Business Development to provide scientific insights for evaluating external assets and opportunities, identifying risks, and formulating mitigation strategies.
  • Partner with the Innovation Lab team to prioritize hypotheses, identify potential assets, and generate evidence to facilitate advancement into clinical development.
  • Foster open relationships with peers and external partners to ensure optimal decision-making.
Success Factors:

Minimum Qualifications:
  • PhD or MD/PhD in Biology, Pharmacology, Molecular or Cell Biology, or a related life sciences field, with over 15 years of experience, including a minimum of 10 years in the pharmaceutical industry.
  • Deep understanding and recognition as a scientific leader in drug development for assets progressing through preclinical and IND-enabling studies and/or Phase I/II trials.
  • Extensive knowledge of emerging research, mechanisms of action, and disease models in anterior and posterior segment eye care diseases, both preclinically and clinically.
  • Familiarity with the clinical landscape in ophthalmology, including a solid understanding of novel agents and their implications.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills, with proficiency in writing, reviewing, and editing scientific documents.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, diplomacy, and the ability to influence positively.
  • Outstanding communication and collaboration skills to drive decision-making within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities to ensure effective outcomes, showcasing business agility and a solution-oriented mindset.

  • Proven track record of advancing ophthalmology therapeutic programs through preclinical and/or clinical development.
  • Experience in research and/or development of therapies for anterior and/or posterior eye care segments.
