Mental Health Worker Job Summary

The Mental Health Worker plays a vital role in providing support to ensure the psychiatric and physical nursing care needs of patients are met. As a member of the healthcare team, this individual evaluates, intervenes, and provides therapeutic one-to-one interaction to patients using the Wellness and Recovery Philosophy.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Initiate, observe, document, and communicate patient needs to ensure safety on the unit, including Line of Sight precautions or one-on-one supervision as clinically indicated.
  • Facilitate and/or co-facilitate groups with other team members based on training and level of competence.
  • Assist patients in maintaining activities of daily living, including feeding, hygiene, and ambulating.
  • Thoroughly understand treatment philosophy, treatment goals, policies, rules, and regulations to make independent judgments in providing basic patient care activities.
  • Participate in the treatment planning process and support the implementation of the treatment plan on the unit with the patient.
  • Assist in delivering physical care as needed and perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements:
  • Minimum 6 months of direct patient care experience in an acute psychiatric hospital or psychiatric health facility, or 2 years of experience within the last 5 years delivering direct patient-focused care on behavioral disabilities.
  • Associate's degree or equivalent of 2 years of college coursework in nursing, social, or behavioral sciences.
  • Basic Life Support certification.
  • Demonstrated skills and ability to care for acutely mentally ill individuals.
  • Knowledge of the challenges involved in managing acute or chronically mentally ill patients and possible associated behaviors.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing, including computer skills.
  • Knowledge of basic mental health functions, such as assisting with activities of daily living, obtaining vital signs, and documentation observations.
  • Ability to relate empathetically to adult psychiatric patients.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bilingual skills.
  • Knowledge of treatment philosophy, treatment goals, policies, rules, and regulations related to patient care, as well as interest in working in a recovery-promoting environment using a Wellness/Recovery Model.
  • Knowledge of the principles involved in treatment, interventions, and procedures provided by the service.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology used in psychiatric care of patients.
