BASIC FUNCTION:

As a key member of our educational team, the Support Assistant for Exceptional Children will work closely with teachers to ensure the success of students with special needs. The primary goal is to provide support and access to general education as appropriate, while assisting in the achievement of Individual Education Program (IEP) goals.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  1. Assist in the instruction of individual EC students or groups of EC students in all curricular areas as directed by the teacher.
  2. Collect and document data to track individual student progress on IEP goals.
  3. Collaborate with teachers to devise instructional strategies and plans.
  4. Operate and maintain equipment and materials for both classroom and individual students.
  5. Supervise and assist during emergency drills, assemblies, play periods, field trips, and other designated activities.
  6. Act as a bus monitor when special needs of an EC student are identified by the IEP team.
  7. Alert the teacher to any problem or special information about an individual student.
  8. Participate in in-service training programs for professional growth and development.
  9. Assist in checking materials, portfolios, correcting papers, supervising, and testing as directed by the teacher.
  10. Contribute to maintaining bulletin boards and other learning centers.
  11. Assist in school routines and transitions.
  12. Support student attendance procedures, record keeping, collecting money, ordering materials, and other duties as assigned.
  13. Provide physical assistance to students as needed in areas of self-help, clothing, toileting, and other daily living skills.
  14. Support therapists and teachers as needed in duties related to occupational and physical therapy and mainstreaming classes.
  15. Provide physical assistance as needed to students by writing assignments under the teacher's direction.
  16. Assist with lifting, positioning, and pushing wheelchairs as needed.
