Position Overview:

The Fiber Optic Technician is responsible for the installation and maintenance of FTTP, FTTDP, FTTN/FTTLA systems, including night maintenance, new construction projects, and emergency response. Candidates must be open to travel, be available for on-call duties, and exhibit self-motivation, teamwork, and diligence. Key responsibilities include installing and maintaining the broadband network with a focus on fiber optic cable splicing and troubleshooting. Technicians will prepare and splice fiber using various techniques, troubleshoot and repair using optical testing equipment, and work with fiber cables ranging from single fiber to 288 counts, including performing necessary ring cuts.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct testing and activation of subscriber connections in both indoor and outdoor environments; perform power meter testing; and undertake additional duties as assigned.
  • Execute various tasks necessary for making cross-connects on fiber distribution frames and testing fiber optic cables, utilizing OTDR (optical time-domain reflectometers) and Power meter and Source.
  • Carry out a range of tasks to install and maintain fiber broadband network equipment.
  • Perform tasks related to fiber optic splicing, including fusion splicing and splice closure preparation during approved times or maintenance windows.
  • Identify and locate underground fiber-optic cables.
  • Maintain records associated with daily activities, including material usage and other maintenance documentation.
  • Handle tasks related to splicing cut sheets and diagrams.
  • Engage in preventive maintenance of the fiber network (both aerial and underground), including regular inspections of fiber paths, tree removal, and re-hanging splice closures and snowshoes.
  • Ensure buildings and grounds are safe, presentable, and well-maintained.
  • Safely operate bucket trucks, climb ladders, and use other equipment following safety protocols.
  • Perform minor preventive maintenance on assigned vehicles.
Required Qualifications:
  • Training in fiber splicing that includes sending light through fiber and familiarity with optical time domain reflectometers (OTDRs), basic networking, and fusion splicing experience.
  • Willingness to travel 80% of the month, potentially 2-5 days per week, with accommodations for overnight stays and per diem.
  • Overtime availability is necessary for this position.
  • Comfort with an on-call rotation and performing night maintenance duties.
  • Basic understanding of computer applications, smartphones, electricity, and electronics.
  • Knowledge of fundamental safety principles.
  • Effective communication skills with colleagues across departments in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Aptitude for conveying technical information to non-technical individuals.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to prioritize multiple tasks effectively.
  • Capability to lift up to 100 pounds occasionally, with frequent lifting or carrying of items weighing up to 50 pounds.
