Overview:


Under the guidance of the Field Manager, the Field Operations Supervisor plays a crucial role in ensuring the maintenance and overall quality of the playing field and adjacent landscape areas.

This position oversees part-time staff and interns engaged by the Grounds Department.

The Field Operations Supervisor is tasked with maintaining a premier field that adheres to the standards and safety protocols established by Major League Baseball (MLB) and the Director of Field Operations.


Key Responsibilities:
Oversee the recruitment, training, and management of seasonal part-time staff and internship candidates.

Track expenses and provide essential financial documentation to assist in managing the assigned operating budget.

Maintain a detailed and accurate record of all pesticide and fertilizer applications.

Supervise daily operations necessary for maintaining a professional-grade field.

This includes, but is not limited to:

advanced turf management, precise pesticide and fertilizer applications, and comprehensive management of infield clay, pitching mounds, and home plate areas, along with the warning track.


Assist in preparing the field for all baseball-related events and manage field requests from players and coaching staff.

Oversee all field activities on game days and non-game days.

This includes, but is not limited to:

preparations for MLB games, concerts, corporate sponsorship events, community outreach programs, and other scheduled events.

Responsible for aiding in the upkeep of all equipment to prolong its lifespan and appearance.


In the absence of the Director of Field Operations or the Field Manager, this role may be entrusted with executing all field activities, managing staff, and effectively liaising with front office personnel, coaches, and players.


This position is not exempt from any other duties necessary to meet the expectations and operational needs of the Field Management Department.



Qualifications:

Associate or Bachelor's Degree in Turf Management, Plant Science, Soil Science, or Agronomy.


Experience and understanding of essential turfgrass cultural practices such as mowing, aerification, topdressing, sodding, seeding, irrigation, and fertility applications.


A minimum of 2-3 years of experience managing a natural grass playing surface at a professional or collegiate sports venue.

Active membership in the Sports Field Management Association is preferred.

Supervisory experience is advantageous.

Achieved or pursuing Certified Sports Field Manager certification.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities necessary to perform essential functions:


In-depth knowledge of agronomy and regional turfgrass management practices, including pest, disease, and weed management; soil chemistry; various aerification techniques; topdressing; sodding; seeding; field logo painting; and field layout and measurements.

Experience and understanding of irrigation repairs and general irrigation system usage.


Ability to safely operate a variety of equipment: mowers, tractors, turf cultivation implements, forklifts, skid steers, boom lifts, and scissor lifts.

Experience and knowledge of small engine operation and maintenance.

Possess strong problem-solving skills, proactive planning abilities, and creative thinking to support operations.


Ability to meet deadlines under pressure and adapt to rapidly changing work schedules and environmental conditions throughout the baseball season.

Budget management skills are preferred but not mandatory.

Ability to obtain a District of Columbia issued Pesticide Applicators License and comply with all regulations.

Must demonstrate exceptional attention to detail.

Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.

Physical/Environmental

Requirements:

Field management personnel primarily work outdoors in varying weather conditions.

The role is not deemed hazardous; however, pesticides must be handled with care to avoid harm.

Employees using tools and machinery must exercise caution to prevent injuries.


Workers will encounter both indoor and outdoor environmental conditions, including extreme heat, extreme cold, noise, hazards, and atmospheric conditions (fumes, odors, dust, mists, gases, or poor ventilation).

While performing job duties, employees are regularly required to stand for extended periods, walk and run long distances, and climb stairs.

Employees must be able to stoop, kneel, crouch, or sit and must lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
