Job Overview:

Key Competencies:

  • Proven expertise in hands-on support for the installation of new or modified manufacturing machinery, including troubleshooting and initiating mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Demonstrated experience in project management, focusing on evaluating and enhancing equipment installation practices to boost efficiency, sourcing and accelerating parts and materials, and ensuring that all documentation, schedules, and checklists are current.
  • Capability to oversee both internal and external technicians, as well as maintenance personnel and contract trades, throughout all phases of equipment installation and conversion, including demolition, construction, installation, testing, and debugging of manufacturing systems.

Position Objectives:

  • Provide hands-on support for the installation of new or modified manufacturing equipment.
  • Guide and direct internal maintenance teams and external contractors during all phases of equipment installation and conversion.
  • Conduct hands-on troubleshooting, initiate processes, design, and document Electrical and Control Systems for new or modified manufacturing equipment.
  • Revise existing documentation to finalize drawing packages, installation checklists, machine part lists, illustrations, and specifications for manufacturing equipment.
  • Adjust machine control programs for new or existing process equipment, including but not limited to pick-and-place systems, servo-driven manipulators, robotics, automated part traffic flow, valve control for process gases and fluids, PLC-controlled I/O, and machine communication networks.
  • Evaluate the condition and functionality of existing equipment in relation to new installation plans.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Carry out initial equipment setup and debugging until the point of handover to operations.
  • Provide advanced troubleshooting support, replacing or directing trades as necessary to swap out defective components and implement design changes to resolve equipment/process challenges.
  • Source and expedite materials for new or modified equipment.
  • Create electrical installation checklists and timelines, overseeing their application as necessary.
  • Assist in the development of electrical installation checklists and timelines, ensuring their effective usage.
  • Prepare work orders and guide maintenance personnel and/or external contractors in the fabrication, assembly, testing, and installation of equipment.
  • Review and revise installation documentation and drawings as needed.
  • Modify software programs utilized for process equipment control.
  • Understand the setup and use of machine controls for both digital and analog I/O.
  • Redline existing schematics and coordinate with drafting services or supervise draftsmen as needed to address design challenges.
  • Provide training to internal maintenance teams and external contractors on new equipment installation procedures as necessary for successful execution of installation tasks.
  • Redesign electrical components to minimize installation costs, resolve equipment interferences, and correct subpar designs.
  • Analyze and enhance equipment installation practices to improve efficiencies, specifically aimed at optimizing installation schedules.

Required Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering (4-year degree required; degrees other than BSEE may be considered if relevant work experience aligns with the job description).

Required Experience:

  • A minimum of 5 years of relevant experience.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and MS Office is required.

Unique Requirements:

  • Positions will require spending the majority of time on the production floor working with equipment.
  • Strong practical hands-on skills.
  • Proficient in electro-mechanical troubleshooting and familiar with electrical schematics.
  • Knowledge of motion control systems: servo, stepper, DC, AC drives.
  • Understanding of process variables: flow, temperature, rate, pressure, level.
  • Thorough knowledge of current loops.
  • Familiarity with serial communication protocols: RS232/485, Ethernet, IEEE-488.
  • Understanding of machine control systems and classical control theory.

Preferred Equipment or Software Experience:

  • Experience with Windows, MS Office suite (including PowerPoint, Excel, Word), AutoCAD 2023, AutoCAD Electrical 2023, PLC and PC-based systems, Allen-Bradley PLC, Beckhoff PLC/Motion Control, B-R Control, Fanuc Robotics, C++, Visual Basic, IFix, and automated equipment systems.

Preferred Equipment Familiarization:

  • Fluke Meters, Oscilloscopes, and other electronic testing equipment.
  • Programmable Controllers.
  • Equipment used for machine installation activities, such as man lifts, label makers, hand tools, etc.
