About the Role:

The Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law seeks a seasoned professional to lead its Criminal Justice Project. As the Director, you will spearhead the organization's national efforts to address racial disparities within the criminal justice system.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop, manage, and lead all aspects of the project's litigation docket, public policy work, and criminal justice initiatives.
  • Collaborate with the Lawyers' Committee leadership to develop and implement the project's strategic direction.
  • Identify priorities and ensure effective use of resources.
  • Monitor nationwide criminal justice issues and identify opportunities to expand the project's impact.
  • Supervise a team of attorneys and professional staff, including Associate Directors, Counsel, Investigators, Paralegals, and Legal Assistants.
  • Supervise litigation activities, including investigations, client relationships, and expert witness management.
  • Work with Pro Bono Attorneys and other Co-Counsel to support the project's active docket.
  • Engage in externally facing activities, including public speaking, coalition representation, and event leadership.
  • Develop and manage the project's budget, pursuing funding opportunities and completing administrative tasks.

Requirements and Competencies:

  • 8-10 years of experience in criminal justice reform/litigation, with at least 5 years at a civil rights organization.
  • Admission to the bar of at least one state and eligibility to waive into the DC Bar or sit for the DC Bar exam.
  • Experience as a manager, with the ability to lead, motivate, and inspire a diverse team.
  • Exceptional legal research and writing, oral advocacy, and communication skills.
