We are seeking a highly motivated and passionate individual to join our team as an Open Horizon DC Justice Fellow. This fellowship provides a unique opportunity to contribute to transforming the District's approach to punishment and public safety by crafting new and transformative public policy solutions to entrenched problems.
As a Fellow, you will work closely with our team to develop creative policy solutions that promote decarceration and compassion, giving people the tools and resources they need to thrive. You will also share our commitment to working with and transferring power to DC residents most impacted by criminal laws and policies.
Responsibilities will include:

- Organizing events and surveys to gather information on the needs of directly impacted DC residents;
- Partnering with national and local advocates to push local bills forward;
- Attending rallies, conferences, and social media events relating to professional development, local policy, and decarceration;
- Preparing reports for public hearings, communications, and campaign plans;
- Tracking relevant national and local laws relating to individual campaigns and other DCJL campaigns;
- Designing documents, including correspondence, reports, presentations, advocacy campaign materials, newsletters, advertisements, and fundraising literature;
- Establishing goals, strategies, and metrics; tracking, analyzing, and reporting on the performance of campaigns;
- Maintaining the structure and organization of shared files and assets on a cloud-based system.
Requirements include:
- Graduation from law school within the last two years or current academic year;
- Commitment to completing 12 months of service with DC Justice Lab;
- Longstanding ties to Washington, DC, and local issue advocacy;
- Demonstrated commitment to advancing criminal justice or racial justice through civic engagement;
- Desire to learn more about criminal law, policy, and procedure;
- Exceptional oral and written communication and listening skills;
- Knowledgeable about the issues facing people with lower income and people involved in the criminal legal system;
- Educational, personal, and professional experience demonstrating the passion and skills to perform the fellowship.
