Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Mechanic Assistant to join our team at Atlanta Public Schools. As a key member of our fleet maintenance team, you will be responsible for supporting our bus fleet and assisting our experienced mechanics with various tasks.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Transport buses between bus lots and designated repair areas.
  • Perform routine maintenance tasks, including jump starting buses and load testing batteries.
  • Steam wash engines after repairs to ensure leaks are corrected.
  • Replace seat covers and foam as needed on buses.
  • Repair broken windows and window latches on buses.
  • Maintain parking lot striping and numbering, ensuring compliance for inspections.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Fleet Foreman.
Requirements:
  • Basic knowledge of automotive/truck mechanical systems.
  • Strong work ethic and ability to work as part of a team.
  • Willingness to work in all weather conditions performing manual labor.
  • Ability to provide own small hand and power tool set, including a drill, with a locking tool cart or box.
  • Desire to achieve ASE certification.
  • Ability to provide safety shoes.
Education and Certification:
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Valid Georgia Driver's License required.
  • Class B CDL license required within 6 months of employment.
Work Experience:
  • Prior mechanical service experience or CDL operation preferred.
Compensation:
  • Salary Grade: 119
  • Salary Range: FY'23 APS Salary Schedule (All Positions)
  • Work Year: Annual
  • FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
  • Employment Category: Classified
  • Reports to: Fleet Foreman
