Job Summary:

As a Clinical Phlebotomy Specialist at Advocate Aurora Health, you will play a vital role in ensuring the accuracy and efficiency of blood collection procedures. Your expertise will be essential in maintaining the highest standards of patient care and safety.

Key Responsibilities:

Verify patient identification to ensure accurate specimen collection
Assess patient reactions to specimen procurement and provide necessary assistance
Perform venipuncture and collect specimens from newborn, pediatric, and adult patients according to established protocol
Obtain medical assistance when necessary and ensure completion of specimen collection functions according to protocol
Ensure that specimens are properly labeled and suitable for testing
Resolve specimen identification and/or requisition problems and clarify requests
Perform limited testing under Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA), 1988 guidelines according to established policies and procedures
Answer and screen telephone calls, assist with inventory, and maintain supplies and/or equipment
Provide assistance in support of Billing and other business functions
Accept specimens from internal and external customers, receive and sort specimens, package and track specimens for transport, and process specimens for testing
Order and verify test requests, document appropriate information for quality assurance/improvement, and run quality control checks
Notify providers of stat, critical, and other abnormal results as defined by policy and procedure
Perform laboratory result entry in the computer system, perform internal and external proficiency testing, and review pending and management reports
Generate and distribute reports, instruct employees and students in phlebotomy, data entry, and specimen processing functions, and demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served

Requirements:

High School Graduate
No experience required
Demonstrated knowledge and experience in phlebotomy or related laboratory function
Basic computer skills, including experience using computer software applications, keyboarding, and typing skills
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, good listening skills, and ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks simultaneously
Demonstrated customer service skills to interface effectively with physicians, patients, visitors, and other healthcare employees

Working Conditions:

Operates all equipment necessary to perform the job
Frequently lifts up to 10 lbs, occasionally lifts up to 50 lbs
Must be able to sit, stand, walk, and bend the majority of the workday
May be exposed to mechanical, electrical, chemical, radioactive, and/or infectious agents
Will be exposed to human blood and body fluids
Must wear appropriate lab coat, gloves, gowns, and eye and face protection as needed
Must be able to handle stressful situations in a calm and professional manner
