Position Overview

The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a dedicated professional to join the Abandoned Mine Land (AML) Program as a Mapping Specialist. This role is essential for overseeing the implementation of the statewide AML initiative, ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct fieldwork for AML inventory, utilizing advanced GIS techniques and spatial analysis.
  • Perform mapping and administrative tasks that facilitate project development and management.
  • Utilize engineering principles and scientific methodologies to support AML operations.
  • Engage in the design and maintenance of spatial databases, ensuring data integrity and accessibility.
  • Collaborate with team members and work independently to meet project deadlines.
  • Navigate challenging terrains and operate 4-wheel drive vehicles as necessary.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • In-depth knowledge of scientific and engineering principles relevant to AML.
  • Proficiency in computer operations, CAD, GIS, GPS, and remote sensing technologies.
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to apply engineering principles effectively.
  • Experience with engineering and scientific equipment, along with computer systems.
  • A valid driver's license and a clean driving record.

Additional Preferences

While not mandatory, the following qualifications are advantageous:

  • Experience in the mineral extraction industry, particularly in spatial database management.
  • Relevant certifications or registrations in the field.
