Job Summary

The Christ Hospital is seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Surgical Services Assistant I to join our team. As a key member of our surgical services team, you will play a critical role in ensuring the smooth operation of our operating rooms and providing exceptional patient care.

Key Responsibilities
  • Ensure the operating room remains clean, clutter-free, and well-stocked with necessary supplies and equipment.
  • Properly clean, care for, and place essential equipment needed for scheduled cases.
  • Ensure orderliness and efficiency in the performance of tasks, including cleaning, stocking, and supporting the surgical team.
  • Transport specimens and patients as directed by the RN.
  • Assist with positioning and moving patients from bed to stretcher according to RN instructions.
  • Remove unnecessary equipment and return it to its proper storage area.
  • Perform surgical shaves and preps as needed, following O.R. prep guidelines and/or surgeon preference.
  • Assist the circulating nurse with tying sterile gowns and under the direction of the RN, assist with surgical preps and holding of extremities.
  • Retrieve case carts from Central and deliver them to the proper O.R. room prior to scheduled start time.
Communication and Leadership
  • Share pertinent patient information with the surgical team.
  • Communicate openly with team members and ancillary departments regarding patient care needs, isolation precautions, and special patient requirements.
  • Report observations and data to the appropriate team members.
  • Demonstrate leadership skills, including the ability to motivate, educate, and mentor peers.
  • Act rapidly and calmly during emergencies and provide necessary items called for by the O.R. team.
Productivity and Safety
  • Maintain orderliness and efficiency of the work environment, adhering to AORN Standards to ensure minimal turnaround time between cases.
  • Display flexibility in accepting changes in assignments.
  • Understand fiscal responsibility by utilizing time, equipment, and supplies appropriately.
  • Call maintenance for necessary repairs and stock supplies in rooms according to standards.
  • Ensure beds, stretchers, and carts are in proper position for patient safety.
  • Implement infection control measures, including good hand washing and aseptic technique, universal precautions, and isolation procedures.
  • Dispose of waste according to hospital procedures and transport it to the central location.
Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess a high school diploma or equivalent and have no prior experience. A BLS certificate is required. The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent communication and leadership skills, as well as the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
