Role Summary
The Sno-Isle Regional Library System is dedicated to serving a diverse community, including a significant military demographic. The Public Services Assistant I role is integral to our mission, working alongside a passionate team to deliver outstanding customer support. Responsibilities include assisting patrons with account inquiries, facilitating new account registrations, managing materials, responding to phone inquiries, and executing circulation tasks in alignment with library operations. This role may require availability during mornings, afternoons, evenings, and weekends, including Sundays, and may necessitate adaptability to future scheduling and location modifications based on library requirements.
This position is part of a union represented by AFSCME Council 2.

Key Responsibilities
The following functions are illustrative of the various tasks performed in this role. - Assist at the library circulation desk, answer phone calls, manage library materials check-in and check-out, register patrons for library cards, and order various library resources.
- Support patrons with self-checkout machines and address inquiries in the hold areas.
- Return library materials to their designated locations and assist with circulation duties.
- Provide assistance to library patrons with basic reference inquiries.
- Respond to technical service requests and assist with issues related to fax machines, public copiers, pay-for-print stations, vending machines, and printers.
- Submit and monitor technical reports for library technology service issues.
- Perform additional public service and general clerical support tasks as assigned.
- Prepare correspondence and reports.
- Train new staff as necessary.
- Participate in meetings, training sessions, and workshops as assigned.
- Assist with special projects as required.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
This position will report to a library circulation supervisor. While direct supervision is not a typical aspect of this role, incumbents may be called upon to provide task direction to Page staff and library volunteers in the absence of a supervisor.
Qualifications
- Familiarity with established practices and procedures for an integrated library system (ILS).
- Understanding of library policies, procedures, and services.
- Knowledge of alpha and numeric systems for organizing library materials.
- Strong customer service abilities.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to uphold the principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion in the workplace and community.
- Effective communication skills with diverse audiences.
- Capability to work independently and prioritize tasks.
- Ability to manage and resolve disruptive behavior effectively.
- Ability to collaborate and maintain effective interpersonal relationships.
- Proficiency in operating relevant computer systems, including hardware and software, such as Microsoft Word and Excel, electronic databases, email, and internet navigation, in addition to other office equipment and security systems.
The knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position can be acquired through a combination of experience and education, including:
- High School diploma or G.E.D. required.
- These skills and abilities are typically gained through completion of secondary education or equivalent, along with several months of experience in a customer service environment.

Most work is conducted in a generally accessible, safe, indoor environment. While performing the duties of this job, the incumbent must identify and organize library materials such as books, audiobooks, and DVDs based on small-print numbers and alphabetical characters; scan and inspect library materials, including opening media cases; and operate computers for extended periods.
Incumbents must occasionally move objects or materials weighing up to 35 pounds, including transferring books and other materials to carts or shelves of varying heights. They may be required to move carts of books and other materials throughout the building for extended periods and frequently remain stationary at one workstation for extended durations.
Incumbents must regularly communicate with coworkers and members of the public. These interactions are generally safe and free of undue stress but require incumbents to be cordial, helpful, and skilled in interpersonal relations with others both in the public and within the Library District.
