Position Summary

The Sno-Isle Regional Library System is dedicated to serving the diverse community of Oak Harbor, including a significant military demographic. The Public Services Assistant I role is integral to our mission, working alongside a passionate team to deliver exceptional customer service. Responsibilities include assisting patrons with account inquiries, facilitating new account registrations, managing material processing, answering incoming calls, and performing circulation tasks as needed. This role may require availability during mornings, afternoons, evenings, and weekends, adapting to the library's evolving needs.

Key Responsibilities

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
  1. Providing assistance at the circulation desk, managing phone inquiries, checking materials in and out, and registering patrons for library cards.
  2. Guiding customers in using self-checkout machines and addressing inquiries in hold areas.
  3. Returning library materials to their designated locations and supporting circulation functions.
  4. Assisting patrons with basic reference inquiries.
  5. Responding to technical service requests and troubleshooting issues with public equipment.
  6. Monitoring and reporting on library technology service issues.
  7. Performing additional public service and clerical tasks as assigned.
Additional Responsibilities
  1. Preparing correspondence and reports.
  2. Training new staff as necessary.
  3. Participating in meetings, training sessions, and workshops as required.
  4. Assisting with special projects as needed.
  5. Carrying out other duties as assigned.
Supervision

This position reports to a library circulation supervisor. While direct supervision is not typical, incumbents may provide task direction to Page staff and library volunteers in the supervisor's absence.

Qualifications
  1. Knowledge of library systems and procedures.
  2. Familiarity with library policies and services.
  3. Understanding of organizational systems for library materials.
  4. Strong customer service skills.
  5. Excellent organizational abilities and attention to detail.

Education and Experience

Qualifications for this position can be obtained through a combination of education and experience, including:
  1. A High School diploma or G.E.D. is required.
  2. Experience in a customer service environment is preferred.
Physical and Environmental Conditions

The physical demands of this position include:

Most work is conducted in a safe, accessible indoor environment. Duties involve organizing library materials, operating computers for extended periods, and occasionally lifting objects weighing up to 35 pounds. Incumbents may need to move carts of materials throughout the library and maintain effective communication with colleagues and patrons.
