Clinical Research Phlebotomist
Position Overview
The University of Michigan is looking for 1-2 reliable and detail-oriented temporary Research Assistants with extensive phlebotomy expertise to contribute to our NIH/CDC-funded respiratory virus research initiatives. The selected candidate will serve as the primary phlebotomist for our longitudinal cohort study, operating under the guidance of the Center Manager and project leaders.
The temporary Research Assistants will be stationed at the School of Public Health within the Center's blood draw facility. Responsibilities include performing blood draws on both pediatric and adult participants enrolled in the study. It is essential for the candidate to accurately label samples and ensure their prompt delivery to the Center's on-site laboratory. This temporary role coincides with the influenza season and involves periods of increased and decreased blood draw activities.
Participants in this longitudinal study will return for blood draws multiple times throughout the year. We seek a candidate who is personable and proficient in phlebotomy to facilitate ongoing sample collections. You will likely be the sole phlebotomist during your shifts. Blood draw schedules are seasonal, with peak activity occurring during specific months and slower periods in between. During off-peak times, there may be opportunities to assist with other research-related duties.
Key Responsibilities
- Collect blood samples from enrolled study participants through venipuncture.
- Process all specimens in accordance with research protocols, preparing them for transport and ensuring timely delivery to the Center's laboratory.
- Monitor and replenish supply inventory as necessary.
- Exhibit professional and respectful behavior consistently; deliver exceptional customer service to maintain participant retention.
- Accurately document and record data, safeguarding the integrity and confidentiality of participant information while adhering to study protocols and ethical standards.
- Collaborate with the research team to ensure timely completion of study activities.
- Coordinate participant communications, ensuring effective organization and outreach.
- Provide support and address participant inquiries throughout the study.
- Maintain open communication and teamwork with colleagues.
- Assist with additional research tasks as required, based on skills and experience.
Qualifications
- A minimum of two years of consistent phlebotomy experience in a clinical or research environment (at least 20 hours/week); experience with pediatric and adult patients, including challenging venipunctures.
- Commitment to safety protocols and procedures, fostering a secure environment for participants and staff while ensuring confidentiality.
- Strong interpersonal abilities, capable of engaging effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
- Excellent verbal, written, and organizational skills to facilitate effective collaboration with study participants and the research team.
- Proficiency in basic computer applications, including data entry and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Ability to work independently, demonstrating strong prioritization, initiative, and problem-solving capabilities.
Work Environment
Eligibility for hybrid or remote work arrangements is determined by the hiring department. Work agreements are subject to annual review and may change at any time.
