Job Title: Lecturer-Researcher

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is seeking a Lecturer-Researcher to join our School of Architecture and Planning. The successful candidate will teach graduate-level courses and conduct research in the area of technology and urban planning.

Responsibilities:
  • Teach two graduate-level classes per year on topics such as data visualization, GIS, civic technology, data ethics, and urbanism.
  • Hold weekly office hours and participate on department committees.
  • Serve as academic and thesis advisor to Master of City Planning program students.
  • Conduct research aimed at improving design and planning of urban environments.
  • Develop research agenda and contact MIT faculty and staff for feedback on proposed theme.
  • Lead design of ideation workshops and other research-related events.
  • Build publication record related to research theme and present research at conferences.
  • Draft research narratives and prepare grant and other funding proposals.
  • Represent LCAU and research to sponsors and develop connections across MIT, companies, non-governmental organizations, and governments.
Requirements:
  • Master's degree in planning, architecture, landscape architecture, urban design, or related field.
  • Three years' professional experience in urban planning or design and at least two years' direct research experience.
  • Teaching experience in professional development or at a graduate level in the area of data visualization, GIS, data design, or civic technology.
  • Excellent research and written and verbal communication skills.
  • Project management and exhibition experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. in a related field.

This is a full-time role, but part-time will be considered. The appointment is for three years, beginning September 2024. Application materials should include a cover letter, curriculum vitae, and a link to a digital portfolio (20-page max).
