POSITION SUMMARY

Under general oversight, the role involves executing specialized technical tasks at crime scenes and within the forensic laboratory to detect, gather, preserve, photograph, and identify physical evidence pertinent to criminal investigations.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Recognize, document, gather, process, and safeguard crime scenes and associated evidence; maintain logs and store evidence securely; facilitate the transportation of evidence for examination or legal proceedings.
  • Utilize technical apparatus including alternate light sources, lasers, cameras, video equipment, and automated fingerprint identification systems (AFIS).
  • Capture images of crime scenes, evidence, victims, and suspects; create photographic displays.
  • Compile and present statistical data essential for the operation of the crime scene unit.
  • Research, gather data, and procure equipment and supplies for the crime scene unit, investigations, and patrol operations.
  • Employ contemporary techniques to identify, preserve, and collect latent fingerprints; compare and identify fingerprints; fingerprint suspects, detainees, and deceased individuals; maintain filing systems; utilize an AFIS terminal for database searches to aid in suspect identification; prepare fingerprint displays.
  • Collect, photograph, preserve, identify, and conduct basic analyses of blood, ballistic, narcotic, and other forms of physical evidence; perform physical match comparisons.
  • Create castings or molds of tire tracks, footprints, handprints, tools, and other impressions.
  • Process evidence in the laboratory using specialized powders, chemical solutions, forensic light sources, and various photographic equipment to develop and preserve evidence.
  • Prepare scale diagrams, charts, displays, and other materials for professional court presentations.
  • Provide expert testimony in court regarding the identification of evidence.
  • Perform additional related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: Associate's degree or equivalent to 60 semester hours of college coursework, with a focus on criminal justice, forensics, or a related discipline.

Experience: At least one year of experience in the detection, collection, preservation, photography, fingerprinting, and identification of evidence related to crime scenes.

Certifications/Licenses:

  • Valid driver's license.
  • Ability to obtain a fingerprint comparison certificate within one year of employment.
  • Ability to obtain a crime scene academy certificate within one year of employment.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

  • General law enforcement codes, practices, and methodologies.
  • Modern office procedures, methods, and computer systems.
  • Safe driving principles and practices.

Skills in:

  • Operating modern office equipment, including computers and software.
  • Safely operating a motor vehicle.

Ability to:

  • Learn principles of crime scene investigation.
  • Operate technical crime scene and laboratory equipment.
  • Understand and apply relevant Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and regulations.
  • Learn about the criminal justice system and the processing of information within it.
  • Understand fingerprint practices, techniques, classifications, records, and equipment.
  • Learn about photographic and video equipment and methods, including printing, developing, and enlarging negatives.
  • Collect evidence and process it using various technical equipment, materials, and methodologies.
  • Perform a range of forensic laboratory procedures.
  • Interpret and explain police records policies and procedures.
  • Produce photographic and video evidence suitable for legal proceedings.
  • Prepare clear and concise reports.
  • Read, comprehend, and apply technical and legal documents.
  • Take accurate measurements.
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain positive working relationships with colleagues and others encountered during work.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, stoop, squat, crawl, twist, climb, and lift up to 50 lbs.; exposure to noise, outdoor environments, confined spaces, chemicals, bloodborne pathogens, viruses, diseases, and mechanical hazards; ability to travel to various sites; availability for shift work, on-call duties, and emergency response.
