Position Overview:
The Educational Guidance Counselor plays a pivotal role in the formulation, execution, and assessment of a holistic counseling framework within the educational institution, adhering to the standards set forth by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA). This professional is dedicated to providing all students with opportunities for academic success, emotional well-being, and career exploration through various methods including classroom instruction, one-on-one counseling, and group sessions. The Educational Guidance Counselor acts as a crucial link among school leadership, educators, families, and the broader community to foster all dimensions of a student's educational journey. This role also involves assisting students in navigating their future educational and career pathways.
This position is accountable to the school Principal.
Qualifications:
- Education: A master's degree in educational counseling, encompassing comprehensive coursework in the principles and practices of counseling as aligned with the ASCA national model. This includes age-appropriate counseling services related to academic guidance, educational assessment interpretation, emotional support, and administrative counseling services.
- Certificates & Licenses: A valid license from the Virginia Department of Education with an endorsement in educational counseling, or the eligibility to obtain such a license.
- Experience: Relevant experience in the specialized field of educational counseling with progressively responsible roles is essential.
Key Responsibilities:
- Establish and refine the comprehensive counseling program in response to student needs, utilizing academic, attendance, and behavioral data.
- Assess student requirements through data analysis and collaboration with school leaders, educators, and staff to enhance program effectiveness.
- Implement the core counseling curriculum through classroom instruction, supplemented by small group and individual sessions aimed at promoting high achievement.
- Deliver age-appropriate lessons and group activities that foster academic, career, and emotional development in collaboration with fellow counselors and teaching staff.
- Guide individual students in the academic advisement process to create personalized academic and career plans based on their interests, abilities, and achievements.
- Provide responsive services informed by academic, career, and emotional data to deliver short-term, solution-focused counseling interventions.
- Respond to crises by assisting students with various emotional and mental health challenges and making appropriate referrals to external mental health services when necessary.
- Collaborate with the Student Support Team and community partners to promote positive emotional development and overall mental health.
- Educate and support students in understanding the college application process, including financial aid, application materials, and scholarship opportunities.
- Facilitate workshops and presentations for students and parents on a range of academic, emotional, and career-related topics.
- Coordinate college visits, Career Day events, and volunteer opportunities, including educational and career assessments aligned with student interests.
- Maintain a variety of confidential and non-confidential student records in collaboration with colleagues.
- Engage in professional development opportunities, including meetings, workshops, and committees, to enhance counseling practices and stay informed about program guidelines.
- Prepare various documents, reports, and communications to effectively relay information to parents and staff.
- Perform additional related duties as assigned to ensure the smooth operation of the counseling department.
Clearance Requirements:
- Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance.
- Tuberculosis Skin Test.
Health Compliance:
- Adherence to safety and health protocols is mandatory.
