Position Summary
Under the guidance of supervisory staff, the Grounds Maintenance Specialist II is responsible for performing essential landscape upkeep and related construction and repair tasks in parks, recreational spaces, and public facilities. The incumbent will oversee a designated area within a park or public facility and may also take on specialized maintenance responsibilities or limited supervisory duties over entry-level maintenance staff.

Key Responsibilities

  • Execute grounds maintenance activities, including planting, cultivating, and caring for various flora.
  • Utilize and maintain gardening tools and equipment effectively.
  • Apply basic plumbing, masonry, and carpentry skills as needed.
  • Implement strategies for managing plant diseases and pest control.
  • Adhere to safety protocols and practices in all tasks.

Required Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to work independently and efficiently in performing skilled and semi-skilled maintenance tasks.
  • Capability to lead and mentor junior staff members.
  • Proficient in operating and maintaining power equipment and vehicles.
  • Skilled in the use of hand and power tools.
  • Ability to identify common plant ailments and pest issues.
  • Capacity to perform physically demanding tasks.
  • Competence in recognizing potential safety risks.
  • Ability to comprehend and follow both written and verbal instructions.
  • Basic mathematical skills for counting and calculations.
  • Proficient in English communication for effective job performance.

Employment Criteria

Minimum Qualifications
Either: One year of full-time experience in a similar role within Sacramento County service.
Or: Two years of full-time paid experience in general grounds maintenance and repair work relevant to the skills required for this position.
Note: Experience refers to full-time paid work unless specified otherwise. Part-time experience may be adjusted to meet the requirements.
Special Requirements

  • A valid California Driver License (Class C or higher) is required.
  • Some positions may necessitate obtaining a Class A or B Driver License.
  • Must be capable of performing heavy physical labor, including lifting and carrying substantial weights, prolonged standing, and outdoor work in varying weather conditions.

Probationary Period
The probationary period for this role is six (6) months.
