POSITION SUMMARY
Under the direct oversight of the principal, Building Engineer, and Zone Supervisor, individuals in this role are responsible for routine and specialized custodial tasks necessary to maintain a clean and secure educational environment for all students within Shelby County Schools.
Key Responsibilities
1. Sweep, mop, scrub, and restore floor surfaces using floor scrubbing and polishing machines, vacuum cleaners, and other motorized cleaning equipment.
2. Clean door mats, boiler flues, light fixtures, lamps, window shades and blinds, drinking fountains, chalkboards, walls, rails, heating and air-conditioning units, and trash containers as needed.
3. Dust or polish furniture, exhibit cases, fixtures, windowsills, doors, trim, and related furnishings.
4. Wash and/or clean interior and exterior window and door glass.
5. Maintain cleanliness in lavatories, restrooms, locker rooms, and shower areas.
6. Remove broken glass, paper, and debris from grounds, play areas, and parking lots to ensure safety.
7. Clean cooling towers and replace air filters.
8. Clear snow and/or ice from outside steps, walks, fire escapes, and building entrances as required.
9. Collect wastepaper, boxes, and other debris and dispose of them in appropriate outside waste containers.
10. Move furniture such as desks, file cabinets, bookcases, tables, chairs, and miscellaneous items as directed.
11. Replace burned-out lamps, broken windows, door glass, window shades, and blinds as instructed.
12. Perform tasks that require the use of ladders.
13. Report to the supervisor any items needing repair or any unsafe conditions.
14. Assist with Board of Education mail truck as requested.
15. Be available to open or close the building in the absence of the Building Engineer.
16. Report all issues to the Principal when the Building Engineer is unavailable.
17. Report concerns to the Zone Supervisor when both the Principal and Building Engineer are unavailable.
18. Perform other related duties as assigned or directed.
Minimum Qualifications
Education: A minimum of tenth (10th) grade preferred.
Additional Job Information
WORK HOURS:
Eight (8) hours per day, twelve (12) months per year. Most custodial tasks are conducted indoors; however, some responsibilities must be carried out outdoors under varying conditions. Candidates must be physically capable of fulfilling all duties associated with this position.
