Department Overview

The Utility Services Department at Orbital Engineering collaborates with utility and communication companies on engineering and construction projects, particularly in Joint Use Pole Attachment Programs and Distribution Engineering Design Projects.

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee the operations of multiple electric distribution teams, ensuring project delivery aligns with established schedules and budgets.
  • Provide leadership for engineering, design, and construction functions within assigned projects.
  • Utilize knowledge of National Electric Safety Code (NESC) Standards and other relevant guidelines to guide teams through engineering and construction commitments.
  • Manage regional productivity and financial budgets, reporting variances to the internal management team.
  • Ensure uniformity in safety practices, engineering design, technology utilization, project execution, and invoicing across department teams.
  • Create and implement training opportunities aligned with team and individual development.
  • Support leadership in client onboarding, contract negotiations, and relationship building to expand Orbital Utility Services.
  • Develop comprehensive customer proposals, including technical scope, schedules, budgets, and resource management.
  • Interface directly with clients or contractors to ensure project execution aligns with agreed scope and manage change orders as necessary.
  • Communicate potential strategic initiatives or departmental risks to the management team.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and provide mentorship and coaching to department team members.
  • Advocate for safety within the department and ensure adherence to quality assurance practices.
  • Facilitate collaboration and communication among clients and team members, managing resource allocation based on client demands.
Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess a Bachelor's degree in an Engineering Discipline (Electrical Engineering preferred) and have over 10 years of relevant experience in electric utility or consulting roles. Demonstrated supervisory skills and project management experience are essential, along with the ability to lead multiple teams effectively.

Proficiency in the National Electric Safety Code (NESC) and strong analytical and decision-making skills are required. Candidates should be detail-oriented, organized, and possess excellent communication skills. Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications and experience in financial reporting are also beneficial.

Preferred Qualifications

Professional Engineering (PE) License and/or Project Management Professional (PMP) certification are preferred. Knowledge of electrical distribution assets, overhead and underground utility distribution, and experience with relevant software for engineering and construction are advantageous.
