Position Title: Speech & Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA)

Department: Special Education

Supervisor: Director, Special Education

Term of Employment: 9 months - position to conclude at the end of the academic year

Salary Classification: Speech Salary Schedule

Job Overview: This role involves supporting the preparation of evaluations for students facing speech and hearing difficulties. The individual will ensure that all directives outlined in the students' Individual Education Plan (IEP) are implemented effectively, enabling students to reach their fullest educational potential.

Key Responsibilities: Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following tasks and duties:
  • Conducting speech-language screenings for students.
  • Implementing and adhering to documented Individual Education Plans (IEPs).
  • Scheduling students for services in accordance with the IEP.
  • Documenting student progress through daily logs and periodic progress reports.
  • Assisting staff during standardized assessments.
  • Participating in parent conferences and IEP meetings under the guidance of the Speech/Language Pathologist.
  • Preparing materials for educators and students.
  • Attending and engaging in training workshops.
  • Maintaining accurate student records while ensuring confidentiality.
  • Performing additional duties as assigned or required.
Knowledge and Skills:
  • Understanding of relevant Federal, state, county, and city regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Familiarity with applicable Peoria Unified School District and departmental policies.
  • Ability to learn specialized methods and procedures for working with students with speech and language impairments.
  • Capacity to work independently with moderate supervision.
  • Skill in fostering effective working relationships with colleagues, students, parents, and the community.
  • Proficiency in utilizing a personal computer with various software applications.
Minimum Qualifications: A Bachelor's degree in Speech and Language Disorders, or Communication Sciences, or an equivalent combination of experience and education that provides comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities, along with a current SLPA license from the Arizona Department of Health Services.

Additional Requirements:
  • Must successfully pass a fingerprint and background clearance check.
  • Must obtain and maintain a valid Arizona driver's license.
  • May need to lift and carry heavy materials weighing up to 20 pounds.
  • May be required to work outside of standard hours.
  • May need to travel for work-related functions.
  • Must be proficient in reading, writing, and speaking the English language.
